2011 4-H Shooting Sports Certification Training Schedule

To serve as a Shooting Sports leader , 4-H leaders must complete the Youth Protection process, must be at least 18 years old, and must have participated in at least one state-level 4-H Leader Training SHOOTING SPORTS CERTIFICATION WORKSHOP in the discipline in which they are providing supervision. If an adult leader is not certified, he/she cannot provide hands-on or safety instruction without a certified leader being present. A leader may obtain certification in an additional discipline (archery, pistol, coordinator, muzzleloader, rifle [.177 pellet, .177 BB, and .22], and shotgun) by completing a certification workshop provided by 4-H certified state training team members. Certification Workshops are not designed to teach volunteers how to use archery equipment or shoot a firearm, but are designed to teach adults how to conduct safe, supervised, shooting experiences for 4-H members enrolled in the project. Therefore only adults who have experience in safely handling archery equipment and/or firearms should enroll in these certification workshops. Special thanks are extended to the WISCONSIN CHAPTER NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION, STATE CHAPTER SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL, NORTHEAST CHAPTER SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL, MIDWAYUSA, ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK FOUNDATION, FEDERAL CARTRIDGE, FRIENDS OF THE NRA, AND THE WISCONSIN 4-H FOUNDATION for making these certification training sessions possible.

For 2012 there will be three certifications offered one Eastern, one Central and one Western. These will be spring and fall dates to be determined.

For 2012 and in the near future, certifications in Coordinator, Pistol and Muzzleloader will only be offered at the central (Stevens Point area) certifications annually.

Wildlife Connection: a training for Adults and Junior leaders age 10 and over

Wildlife Connection: This workshop will be a special feature presented by Barb and Norb Yogerst who have taught wildlife programs at the state and national level. Both youth and adults will learn a variety of wildlife activities and how to introduce these activities in their county 4-H program.

SAVE THE DATE!! You won’t want to miss this great opportunity to attend a workshop designed to teach youth and adults alike a variety of wildlife ecology activities for enhancing shooting sports programs, club meetings, countywide events, camps and activities in the field. Some activities include plaster tracks, wildlife food identification, outdoor survival kits and GPS and compass activities.

4-H Youth (10 years old minimum) and adult 4-H leaders and non-leaders are encouraged to attend this full day Saturday workshop on September 24 at the beautiful Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI.

This wildlife training (not a 4-H Shooting Sports Wildlife certification) is being held at the same time as the statewide 4-H Shooting Sports certification. Adults from the SAME county attending either wildlife or the certification are encouraged to travel together. Participants for both wildlife and the certification will have separate programs Friday evening but both take place at the Lions Camp starting at 6:00 PM There will be some hands-on activities for wildlife participants from 6:00-9:00 PM on Friday evening. The Friday evening session is optional and is not part of the 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Saturday workshop.

The workshop registration fee is the same whether you use the Friday overnight accommodations at the Lion’s Camp or you register for just the Saturday session. The adult registration fee is $15 and $10 for youth.

Both the Wildlife Workshop and the Shooting Sports certification programs run concurrently, so you will only be able to attend one or the other.

Lodging Arrangements

Lodging arrangements at camp will be in male and female modern cabin units with modern restrooms. On the Lions Camp web site they refer to these as their duplex units. Beds are arranged on open bay quarters and each unit has a lounge with TV/VCR, microwave and hotel refrigerator. Bringing a sleeping bag and pillow is recommended as beds are covered with a plastic mattress cover. You will need to bring towel, wash cloth and your personal grooming items.
