2012 4-H Shooting Sports Certification Training Schedule
To serve as a Shooting Sports Leader, 4-H leaders
must complete the Youth Protection process, be at least 18
years old, and have participated in at least one state-level
4-H Leader Training Shooting Sports Certification Workshop in the
discipline in which they are providing supervision. If an adult
leader is not certified, he/she cannot provide hands-on or safety
instruction without a certified leader being present. A leader may
obtain certification in an additional discipline (archery, pistol,
coordinator, muzzleloader, rifle [.177
pellet, .177 BB, and .22], and shotgun) by completing a certification
workshop provided by 4-H certified state training team members. Certification workshops are not designed to teach volunteers how to use archery equipment or shoot a firearm, but are designed to teach adults how to conduct safe, supervised, shooting experiences for 4-H members enrolled in the project. Therefore, only adults who have experience in safely handling archery equipment and/or firearms should enroll in these certification workshops. Special thanks are extended to the WISCONSIN CHAPTER NATIONAL WILD TURKEY FEDERATION, STATE CHAPTER SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL, NORTHEAST CHAPTER SAFARI CLUB INTERNATIONAL, MIDWAYUSA, ROCKY MOUNTAIN ELK FOUNDATION, FEDERAL CARTRIDGE, FRIENDS OF THE NRA, and THE WISCONSIN 4-H FOUNDATION for making these certification training sessions possible.
For 2012, there will be three certification workshops offered—one Eastern, one Central and one Western. In the near future, we plan to offer the Central certification (Stevens Point) every year in the fall. Coordinator, Pistol and Muzzleloader will only be offered at the annual Central Certification in addition to Archery, Rifle and Shotgun. For 2013, we will offer certification workshops in the north and south, and again offer the central certification workshop.
Starting with the Eastern Area (Green Bay) certification (April 13-14, 2012) and in the future: If you complete a certification (in the next two years), you may be eligible to add an additional discipline certification by attending the Saturday eight-hour 4-H certification only. For example, if you attend the Eastern Area 12-hour certification workshop in Green Bay (which includes the four-hour Guidelines session on Friday evening and the eight-hour range session on Saturday) and then attend the Western Area (Eau Claire) certification on April 20-21, 2012, you only need to attend the eight-hour Saturday range session at the Western Area certification. Those attending the Eastern Area certification on April 13-14, 2012, must attend both Friday and Saturday sessions. If you add an additional certification after attending the Eastern certification, you have up to two years from the date you attended the Eastern certification to add another discipline certification using the eight-hour option. As long as you keep adding another eight-hour certification within two years of your last certification, you do not need to repeat a 12-hour certification. If two years expire before your next certification workshop date, the 12-hour certification workshop is required.
Those attending future certifications for the first time must attend the 12-hour certification workshop before they can be considered eligible for the eight hour option.
