2006-07 Diversity Program Development Initiative Grants Announced

The division of Outreach and E-Learning Extension has funded the Diversity Program Development Initiative for seven years for innovative and pilot programs that advance UW-Extension's Plan 2008 goals. Now in its seventh year, DPDI has funded 34 programs with 16 campus Continuing Education and Extension partners and two CEOEL units with 59 community partners. Grants for up to $10,000 were awarded to six programs for 2006-07.

Hmong Home Care Worker Training , UW-Extension School for Workers

Based on assessments of caregiver training needs in the La Crosse area, this program will develop and test culturally appropriate training for caregivers of Hmong patients. The program will also promote occupational opportunities and certifications for Hmong caregivers. Partners are the La Crosse Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and the Wisconsin Association for Caregiver Excellence.

Latino Corporate Leadership Development Program, UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education

This program will assist Latino professionals in integrating into the Greater Milwaukee workforce through individual professional development plans, leadership training, and promotion of graduate degrees. Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee is a partner.

Middle School Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, UW-Rock County Continuing Education

A workshop will expose middle school students of color to science, technology, engineering and math careers and the high school academic courses necessary to help them attain degrees in these fields. At the same time, participants' parents will focus on planning for college, financial aid and academic preparation. The Boys and Girls Club of Janesville and the School Districts of Beloit and Janesville are partners.

ACT Together: ACT Prep Course for Hmong Youth and Parents, UW-La Crosse Continuing Education and Extension

This program provides ACT preparation for Hmong youth in partnership with the La Crosse School District , UW-La Crosse Upward Bound, and the La Crosse Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association. The program also includes Hmong parents in campus visits, attendance at informational sessions, and follow-up consultation on college entrance and admission procedures.

Just Say AAH , UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Studies

An Africa American Heritage Bowl will add an academic component to an annual basketball tournament held as part of Martin Luther King Day in Milwaukee . Friends of Hoop and Running Rebels Community Organization will partner in preparing teams of students for the bowl and bringing them to the UW-Milwaukee campus to learn about higher education opportunities.

ACT Preparation , UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education

Low-income and students of color who are potential first generation college students in the Chippewa Valley region will be supported for special ACT preparation. Partners include the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Chippewa Valley, UW-Eau Claire Upward Bound, UW-Eau Claire Multicultural Affairs, and the Department of Public Instruction Eau Claire Region office.
