The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) may become law in 2009. This group of amendments to the National Labor Relations Act would be the most significant change in the laws governing unionization in the past sixty years. Why do workers need this law? What does it do, and what does it not do? How can we effectively present the facts and benefits of this law to others?
In this one-day conference we will examine and discuss:
- The deficiencies in the current law that EFCA seeks to fix -- organizing new unions, achieving first contracts, and employer penalties for law violations.
- Two critical portions of EFCA and the debate and misinformation about those provisions.
- Unionizing via a process of signing cards ("card check")
- Facilitating initial collective bargaining agreements via neutral third-party mediation and arbitration
- Unionizing via a process of signing cards ("card check")
- How do we discuss EFCA with our co-workers and the public?
