WISCONSIN 4-H WILDLIFE HABITAT EVALUATION PROGRAM

The State 4-H WHEP (Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program) is designed to teach youth about the fundamentals of wildlife management. The primary function of WHEP is education. Natural resources management is learned through participation in habitat evaluation opportunities, associated field trips and demonstrations. Additional benefits come from the development of leadership capabilities and meeting youth and professionals from throughout Wisconsin. Sponsors include the Wisconsin Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Wisconsin 4-H Foundation.

Two senior teams (First place team from 4-H and First place team from FFA) will qualify to compete at the 2010 National 4-H WHEP Invitational.

The 2010 National 4-H WHEP Invitational will be held at the Valles Caldera National Preserve, Los Alamos, New Mexico July 25-29, 2010 and will be based on the 2010 WHEP Manual.

2010 WISCONSIN STATE 4-H WHEP CONTEST

Contest Activities, Registration and Rules are found at 2010 Wisconsin 4-H WHEP Contest . Once you are at the website, go to Registration and General Contest Rules, then click on the links found in Item #1 to register Junior, Intermediate, or Senior team members. Expectation form links are also found in Item #1.

Adults considering coaching a team in the future may participate in an instructional period following each contest component. If interested please register on a team form as an adult and send in the registration form and fee to Tom Carpenter.

8:30 A.M. – 9:30 A.M.        Registration

9:45 A.M. – 10:45 A.M.      Wildlife Management Practices

11:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon  Written Management Plan

12:01 P.M. – 1:00 P.M.     Lunch

1:00 P.M. – 4:00 P.M.      Wildlife ID and General Wildlife Knowledge quiz conducted simultaneously with Oral reasoning

4:00 P.M. – 5:00 P.M.       Awards Ceremony

5:00 P.M.                          Conclude Contest

 

REMINDERS

  • Dress for weather (i.e. rain gear, sunscreen, warm coats, etc.)

  • Enclosed footwear (i.e. no sandals, flip flops, or bare feet)

  • Each participant should have a clipboard and 2 pencils

  • Bring a water bottle

  • Necessary paper for the contest will be provided by Extension

  • Bring recreational equipment (i.e. Frisbees, cards, etc.)
