“Purple Up! For Military Kids”

On Friday April 13, people from across the state of Wisconsin were encouraged to wear purplePurple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue.  Wearing purple was a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices.  OMK would like to thank all who participated in Purple Up!

April marks a very special month in the lives of military families. Operation: Military Kids joins the U.S. Department of Defense in recognizing April as the Month of the Military Child, a time to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and challenges they overcome.

The Month of the Military Child calendar below boasts numerous events and suggested activities to honor and support military children and youth in your community and across the state.

Show your appreciation and "Purple Up!" with Operation: Military Kids on April 13th. We are encouraging everyone across the state of Wisconsin to wear purple on Friday, April 13, as a visible way to show support and thank military children for their strength and sacrifices. Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is offering two training opportunities in Northern Wisconsin. MCEC is holding a Supporting Youth of Guard and Reserve Institute (GRI), May 8-9, and a Living in the New Normal Practicum (LINN), May 10. Both will take place at the Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, WI. These educational opportunities are at no charge to participants, travel and lodging are the responsibilty of the participant.

The GRI (Supporting Children of the National Guard and Reserve Institute) is especially well suited for counselors, school administrators, mental health and social work professionals. The LINN Practicum is very appropriate for Family Readiness Group (FRG) leaders, volunteers, community service organizations and service providers (mental health, social work and child care)>

Working together we can have a strong impact on military families in our own backyard.

Operation Military Kids (OMK) is a nationwide initiative designated to provide support to the children and youth of families that are impacted by the Global War on Terrorism. This includes those served by Army installations, Air Force bases, and those children and youth who are geographically dispersed.

Building upon their ten year collaboration to support youth development programs, 4-H and its military partners are now placing special emphasis on the children and youth of National Guard and Reserve Soldiers.
