Small Engines
Description
Small Engines is a statewide 4-H project. It features curriculum
that will guide you through the project. For a copy contact your
County 4-H Office or order online at: Extension

Small Engines 1
In this beginning project aimed at grades 3-5, focus on the basics of small engines, external engine parts, tools, what makes small engines work, uses of small engines, safety issues, and more.

Small Engines 2
In this intermediate project aimed at grades 6-8, explore the internal parts of engines, engine sizes, compression ratios, seasoning an engine, safety issues, jobs related to small engines, possibilities of starting your own business, and more.

In this advanced project aimed at grades 9-12, tear down and rebuild an engine, use diagnostic tools, research rules and regulations about using small engine machines, select replacement engines, and more.

Small Engines Project Training
Many counties hold local training for members and leaders in
their favorite project areas, including small engines. Watch your
county 4-H Family newsletter or contact your county Extension office
for details.
National 4-H Engineering, Science and Leadership Events
Site for national 4-H contests and educational seminars including
small engines.
State 4-H Mechanical Science Contests: Small Engines
The State 4-H Small Engine Contest evaluates the 4-H member’s ability to work with small gas engines safely and properly. The contest includes a written exam, practical exam on maintenance and safety, parts and tools identification, problem solving and engine troubleshooting.
Wisconsin 4-H and Youth
Conference
If you’re in grades 8-10, check out the next Wisconsin
4-H and Youth Conference, scheduled each June at the UW-Madison
campus. The conference offers educational seminars in most areas
of 4-H. Contact your county Extension office for details.

County Fair 
The county fair . . . what a great time it is! Every summer, families
flock to county fairs to see the latest 4-H project exhibits. Exhibiting
is a fun and educational way for youth to showcase their project
work to judges and to the public.
