Benefits of PLTW

What are some benefits of taking PLTW courses in high school?

Students who excel in PLTW courses can receive advanced standing in engineering technology associate degree programs in nearly a third of Wisconsin's technical colleges and in some undergraduate engineering programs, including the Milwaukee School of Engineering and Purdue University. Students who successfully complete Principles of Engineering or Biotechnical Engineering can be awarded Science credit for high school graduation and college admission.

In early studies conducted by UW Madison's Center on Education and Work, PLTW shows promise. In four Wisconsin high schools, a recent survey found that PLTW students were 10-20% more likely than non-PLTW students in the same schools to agree that, in the past year, they:

  • were encouraged to continue schooling beyond high school.
  • had developed clear career goals, had solved real-world problems.
  • were connecting ideas or concepts from one class or subject area to another.
  • had worked on a project or paper that required research outside of assigned texts.
  • were reading and understanding challenging learning material.

A recent assessment published by TrueOutcomes and a research brief published by the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) indicate increasing numbers of students completing PLTW's engineering and technology courses in high school as well as higher college GPAs among those who have done so.

Research by the PLTW organization reports that 73% of students taking three or more PLTW courses in high school entered related post-secondary programs after high school and 85% of those that enrolled stayed for the second year!
