Courses in PLTW

Project Lead the Way Curriculum

There is a middle school curriculum called Gateway to Technology and a high school PLTW curriculum which includes 9 courses.  Courses that might be offered in a high school include:

  • Introduction to Engineering Design
  • Digital Electronics
  • Principles of Engineering
  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing
  • Civil Engineering/Architecture
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Biotechnical Engineering
  • Engineering Design and Development

Some schools do not offer all the courses and/or may start with one or two and add more courses later.  Students who successfully complete Principles of Engineering or Biotechnical Engineering can be awarded Science credit for high school graduation and college admission.

What makes PLTW courses different?

The classes in PLTW include project based instruction, a focus on the national math and science standards, a focus on team work, communication, problem solving, project research and data collection.  The courses at the middle school might also meet the technology standard for middle school students.

In Project Lead the Way courses, students examine real-world engineering problems in a series of middle school and high school courses and learn to:

  • Understand the scientific process, engineering problem-solving, and the application of technology.
  • Use mathematics knowledge and skills to solve problems.
  • Read, write, listen, and speak effectively.
  • Work well with others.
