Project S.E.E. (Safety, Ecology & Education)

Environmental Education includes adults and youth acquiring positive feelings for the environment and learning the basic structure and function of natural systems. It also involves adult and youth taking action. Project SE.E. is a good example of an action component of environmental Education. Project S.E.E. is a volunteer opportunity designed to improve the safety, ecology, and educational support services of Upham Woods. This program is not conducted every year.

Some of the projects that have been completed during the past years include:

  • Wood chipped trails and teaching stations.
  • Removed alien plants such as garlic mustard from several acres of woodland.
  • Planted trees and bushes.
  • Assembled new cabin beds.
  • Painted the out side and inside of 13 buildings.
  • Put up storms and screens, picked up litter.
  • Replaced roof shingles on four buildings.
  • Installed ceramic tile on cabin floors.
  • Served several hundred meals to hungry volunteers.
  • Installed pine wainscoting in cabins and food service.
  • Obtained free food for volunteers and free building materials.
  • Repaired rotten cabin foundations.
  • Erected erosion bars to divert water on Black Hawk Island.
  • Built the raptor enclosure.
  • Improved electrical needs in cabins.
  • Gave hundreds of youth and adults a sense of ownership and accomplishment in  helping make Upham Woods a better environmental education facility.

Project S.E.E. is open to participation from individuals, families, county 4-H, schools and a variety of other groups. To participating in the next Project S.E.E, contact your youth group leader or the Upham Woods 4-H Environmental Education Center or follow the link above to download a Project S.E.E registration form.
