~Dane County~

I am working this year as a VISTA with UW Extension Dane County 4-H Youth Development and Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens as the Youth Grow Local Coordinator for Madison. Youth Grow local is an initiative that includes Growing School Gardens, a program that helps teachers and parents start and maintain a gardening program at their school; East High School Community Farm, a student run farm that produces food for the students’ families and the Goodman Community Center’s food pantry; and the Troy Kids’ Garden, which serves a diverse population of youth on Madison’s North side. I will also be promoting a financial literacy program at East High School, using their Community Farm as a model. I plan to incorporate science, agriculture and gardening throughout Dane County’s 4-H afterschool programs.
I graduated in May 2009 from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with a degree in Rural Sociology. It was by learning about the impacts of agriculture on the land and society that I became interested in garden education, and how I could get involved. I learned how to garden through a student organization at the university, and eventually got at internship at Community GroundWorks at Troy Gardens, which led me to this position! This job, although challenging at times, has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I can’t wait to continue learning from the Madison Community.
