About Iron County:
Iron County is one of the northern most counties in Wisconsin, bordering the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at one point and Lake Superior at another. The City of Hurley is the seat of government for Iron County and is the largest population center. There are a total of 6861 residents in the county.
Natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities are important assets for the local economy and play and important role in the way of life for Iron County residents. Inland lakes, woodlands, rivers and streams draw those interested in viewing waterfalls, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and ATV riding. Winter snowfall averages 180 inches to help support an active winter sports scene of downhill skiing, snowmobiling and cross county skiing.

About Iron's VISTAS
Mark Hagemann and Shawn Zani will be taking part in the 4-H Trailblazers program offered to Iron County middle school youth. They will be devoting their time to building healthy lifestyle, habits through hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. Deb Leonard of Iron County's Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program will add activities about healthy lifestyles, physical activity and nutrition to the daily routine. Students will learn GPS technology during day-long adventure outings in different parts of Iron County. Trailblazers saw great success last year with 23 participants who logged a combined total of more than 1,300 miles. The program was awarded the 2008 Specialty Program Award by the Wisconsin Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development Professionals.
Mark is back for his 2nd summer as a VISTA and has just completed his sophmore year at Carleton College.

Maria Kopecky and Cortney Ofstad will be part of the LEAF (Learning, Experience, Adventure, Friendship) Program for youth entering grades two through eight. It is designed to promote leadership, create positive learning experiences, provide adventure, and encourage friendships. Activities will include tie-dye, treasure boxes, and bottle rockets.
Maria is a sophmore at UW-Eau Claire. She enjoys playing piano and F.Horn. She is also a member of the Blugold Cross-Country team.

Cortney is a sophmore at Gobegic Community College majoring in Sports Journalism and will be transfering to Michigan State University in 2009. She loves reading, writing, singing, watching sports, playing softball and watching the Milwaukee Brewers.
