Actually, you will save more gas by trading in your gas guzzler for a slightly more efficient model. If you drive 12,000 miles per yera, you will save 200 gallons per year by trading the 15 MPG for a 20 MPG model. Trading in a 30 MPG sedan for a 50 MPG hybrid will save 160 gallons per year. With gasoline at $2.73 per gallon, trading in the 15 MPG will save $2,730 in gas in five years. Trading the SUV for a 25 MPG vehicle will increase the savings to $4,386. All of the the answers are correct. At the national averages of 22.5 miles per gallon and 14,769 miles driven per year per licensed driver, the typical driver would save 23 gallons per year.
