Where the workers live

Where Dane County’s workers live

In 2000, almost 37,000 people working in Dane County lived outside of the county.  That is a 16,000 person increase (78 percent) between 1990 and 2000.  Almost 4,000 more Columbia County residents worked in Dane County in 2000 than in 1990.  The number of Dodge and Green County residents working in Dane county more than doubled during the 1990s.

step 1: getting the worker flow data

County-to-County worker flow data for any county in the U.S. is available in an Excel™ format from the U.S. Census for 2000 and for 1990.

simply scroll down the page, select the state, and the data.

step 2: getting county level data

To obtain county level data, open the Excel™ file and simply scroll down to the appropriate county.

There is a lot of data, but don' tbe intimidated. It is relatively easy to negotiate. If you have problems, or questions contact Andy Lewis.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN

Where Local Residents Work

The other side of the equation, where local residents work also provides some valuable information and insights.

An example: In 2000, Brillion, Wisconsin had a population of about 2,900. The New Excel™ Worksheet with worker flow data by place of residence shows that in 2000, over 600 Brillion residents worked outside of Calumet County.

The New Excel™ Worksheet with worker flow data by place of work (Where Workers Live) reveals that over 2,500 people worked in Brilllion, Wisconsin in 2000. However, 881 of the people working in Brillion also lived Brillion.

Each workday, 600 Brillion residents leave the county to work while over 2,500 people travel to work in Brillion from outside the City.
