4-H Youth Development

Vision

4-H Youth Development: A catalyst for positive community youth development.

Mission

UW-Extension 4-H Youth Development integrates research, education, and community-based partnerships, enabling youth to learn and practice skills to be productive citizens.

Science, Engineering, & Technology

The purpose of the Science, Engineering, and Technology (S.E.T) Team is to build internal capacity to do S.E.T. education in Wisconsin. The S.E.T. approach is characterized by inquiry, investigation and innovation using experiential methods and occurring in non formal settings. Participants in Wisconsin 4-H S.E.T. have the basic curiosity, critical thinking skills and scientific literacy necessary to achieve their personal and community goals. Strengthening Community Environments for Positive Youth Development

Developing Multicultural Understanding

Youth Voices in Community Action and Governance

Promote youth and adults working together in positions of authority to make decisions and take actions to strengthen organizations, communities and our democratic society. Provide resources and training for 4-H programs, community partners, and government bodies who create space for young people to contribute to public decisions and shared governance with adults. Strengthening the Vitality of 4-H Community Clubs

Forage

Team Forage develops and disseminates research-based forage crop information so farmers, agricultural professionals and educators can make informed decisions or develop programs to enhance profitability while sustaining Wisconsin’s natural resources. Fresh Market and Commercial Vegetable Crops

The Fresh Market and Commercial Vegetable Crops Team develops, coordinates and conducts effective interdisciplinary educational and applied research programs for all scales of vegetable producers from small-scale market gardeners to large-scale processors. Fruit Crops

Grains

Horticulture

The Urban Agriculture/Horticulture Team provides research and educational support for the rapidly expanding horticulture industry in Wisconsin. The team provides the educational foundation to facilitate use, production, maintenance and appreciation of horticulture in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. Livestock

The Livestock Team provides educational support to Wisconsin's livestock industries. The team provides research information to enable profitability, environmental consciousness, sustainability, and public appreciation for the economic and cultural values provided by Wisconsin's livestock industries and producers. Nutrient Management

The Nutrient Management Team is developing an integrated approach to provide programming and research for sustainable nutrient management on Wisconsin farms by combining the interests and skills of personnel from UW-Extension, governmental agencies, and the private sector. The mission of the team is to help farmers manage their nutrient resources to maximize profitability and environmental protection. Wisconsin FIRST (Food, Industry Research, Service and Training)

The Wisconsin FIRST (Food Industry Research, Service and Training) team will support the efforts of Wisconsin's food industry by: Conducting applied research that is of use to the food industry; Assist food processors in solving problems they encounter in their operations;
Provide needed training to food processing industry employees and state regulators;

- Aquatic Invasive Species Workgroup

The aquatic invasive species team is working toward a consistent statewide education message and coordination between key agencies involved to reflect a true, statewide effort. Invasive species educational efforts in Wisconsin are expanding and risk fragmentation. In order to present a clear and consistent message, and develop appropriate educational programs, we will seek to coordinate efforts among state agencies and organizations. The Stormwater Team recognizes that stormwater is increasingly becoming an issue facing many communities across Wisconsin. Community & Economic Development Preparedness

Changing economic conditions have forced many Wisconsin communities to rethink their community and economic development strategies. In addition, many communities are beginning to develop the economic development element of their Smart Growth plans but lack strategies based on solid data and proven methods. In addition, some communities lack a shared vision to focus efforts on building Wisconsin's New Economy. This team will support faculuty and their programs aimed at helping communities explore economic development alternatives and in interpreting a wealth of data and information related to addressing their needs. This team's emphasis is expected to be a situational analysis and resulting reorientation of what UW-Extension can and should offer in the area of economic development given our role as an educational institution. Community Planning and Plan Implementation Team

The purpose of the Community Planning and Plan Implementation Team is to develop educational programs and resources for use in helping CNRED Wisconsin communities deal with growth and development issues that arise out of rapidly changing demographic and socioeconomic conditions. Community-Based Leadership Development

The Community-Based Leadership Program Development Team focuses on developing educational materials, programs, curricula and other resources for use in supporting community-based leadership programs. Team efforts are intended to develop a scholarship context and build institutional capacity for UW-Extension around community-based leadership development. Conflict Education

The overall purpose of Extension conflict education programming is to build capacity of Extension personnel to participate constructively in conflicts and to help other parties manage conflicts that achieve agreements mutually beneficial to stakeholders.

Conflict work focuses on communications, relationship building and negotiation processes that enable groups to productively achieve their larger goals. The conflict education team has identified six outcomes of effective conflict programming. They are to: 1) build conflict management knowledge, skills and attitudes of Extension personnel, 2) foster application of conflict management concepts, methods and roles by Extension personnel, 3) build conflict management knowledge, skills and attitudes of clients and stakeholders, 4) support application of conflict management processes and roles by stakeholders engaged in conflicts, 5) strengthen relationship building and problem solving capacity of clientele, stakeholders, networks and communities and 6) strengthen relationship building and problem solving capacity of Extension. Downtown Vitality and Community Placemaking

Downtowns and neighborhood business districts throughout Wisconsin face serious problems that impact quality of community life. The Downtown Vitality and Community Placemaking team's purpose is to help Wisconsin communities in their efforts to recapture or sustain the vitality of their downtown and business districts. This will be accomplished by building the capacity of county-based faculty, and by serving as a knowledge resource to Wisconsin communities. Energy Education

As energy prices continue to rise and environmental questions increase, people need to know how to conserve energy and utilize more sustainable renewable energy technologies. The Energy Education Team will focus on improving the public's understanding of available energy conservation and renewable energy options, and on increasing adoption of energy conservation and renewable energy practices. Entrepreneurship

Forestry and Wildlife

The Forestry Team will work in cooperation with other statewide and local partners to develop and deliver educational programs and materials on forest use and management for Wisconsin's forestry community. Programming will focus on woodland owner education, professional and leadership development for foresters, and education surrounding efficient use of forest resources for industries within the state. Future Land Use Issues and Priorities

The purpose of the Future Land Use Issues and Priorities Team is to develop educational programs and resources for use in helping Wisconsin communities deal with growth and development issues that arise out of rapidly changing demographic and socio-economic conditions. Groundwater

Local Government & Finance

The purpose of the Local Government and Finance Team includes improving local government education offered by state specialists and county educators; encouraging more county educators to become engaged in this education; and ensuring that communication exists among county educators, state specialists and the administration regarding local government education. Organizational Development

The Organizational Development Team focuses on program development and support across a broad spectrum of organizational development topics including education for not-for-profit organizations, groups processes and dynamics, quality and performance improvement, evaluation and inquiry and others. Political Effectiveness

Significant challenges face Cooperative Extension including budget cuts, with all their implications, and increased justification for funding of educational programming. The Political Effectiveness Team will extend the work of the newly forming Community Partner Groups toward building the political base of support necessary to offset these challenges. Public Policy Education

The Public Policy Education Team recognizes that CNRED educators may be asked to program in any number of controversial issues. The purpose of this Team is to develop resources and other forms of support to help CNRED educators evaluate and define their potential roles, in controversial areas. Tourism Research, Planning and Development

The Tourism Research, Planning and Development Team's purpose is to leverage Extension's rich history in tourism programming to help strengthen community tourism and its contribution to Wisconsin's economy. Priorities will include forming synergistic partnerships in and outside Extension around Tourism, and building Extension's capacity in the area of tourism. Volunteer Monitoring

This team will be formed to discuss and address how volunteer monitoring fits within Wisconsin's environmental protection and public education efforts. A team of professionals representing multidisciplinary volunteer monitoring programs will work together to promote volunteer monitoring and acceptance of volunteer efforts on a wider scale. Access to Affordable Housing

The Access to Affordable Housing Team plan seeks to improve housing situations for individuals and families and to increase community capacity for the development and preservation of decent, safe and affordable housing.

Community Connections for Families

Consumer Health Education

The Consumer Health Education Team works toward improved access to health care, increased availability of providers and insurance, involvement in health care policy and improved health, fitness and quality of life including credible health care alternatives. Eating Well and Being Active

The Eating Well and Being Active Team seeks to improve the knowledge and skills of individuals and families in order to select healthier foods and incorporate healthier physical activities as part of a healthy life style. The plan also includes engagement of communities and institutions in addressing these issues.

Family Caregiving

The Family Caregiving Team seeks to increase networking at the state and community level to deliver educational programs, services and resources that enable individuals to improve their knowledge and skills as family caregivers and the needs of the workplace/employers as they are affected by the needs of family caregivers. The plan also works to provide financial literacy with regard to financial security. Lastly, the plan addresses the needs grandparents or other family members as they assume either/or parental responsibility (relative caregiving) or major childcare responsibilities (Kith and Kin). Family Financial Education

The Family Financial Education and Management Team works to improve the knowledge and skills of individuals and families through education, volunteers, and good use of financial products available through financial institutions. Parenting Education

The Parenting Education Team works toward better understanding, identification, implementation and evaluation strategies, activities and policies that have been shown through scientific research and evaluation to be effective and reliable. Poverty and Food Insecurity

The Poverty and Food Insecurity Team works to address issues related to poverty and food insecurity through strategies designed at the community or institutional level and at the individual or family level. This work seeks to reduce the incidence of food insecurity and to maximize available resources. Strengthening Families in Stress and Transition

The Family Stress and Transition Team is intentionally focusing its efforts internally to build the capacity of Extension Educators to effectively provide educational programming that helps families prevent and manage stressful family life. Our plan of work targets two priority areas; namely, to identify and make available 1) a variety of resources for county colleagues to use in educational efforts, and 2) professional development opportunities to increase colleagues' understanding and application of research in family stress-related areas.
