Plenary Session #1 -- Bioenergy and the Bioeconomy. Extension Bioenergy Outreach in the Bioeconomy

Presentation #1: Bioenergy and the Bioeconomy: What is it? Why is it important? (Pat Walsh)

Pat Walsh discusses the move toward a bioeconomy: why is it inevitable? He also looks at the mega-trends – the Three E’s:

  • Energy supply issues
  • Environmental challenges
  • Expansion of the population

Presentation #2: Understanding Bioenergy Production (Karl Green)

Karl Green discusses bioenergy sources and their production processes.

Presentation #3: Extension Bioenergy Outreach in the Bioeconomy: Agriculture, Environment, Community, Economy (Bill Bland and Greg Wise)

Bill Bland’s presentation looks at the analyses behind the debates – tough questions surrounding corn ethanol. He notes that there is a wide range of issues that get pulled into a local debate and points out that what is relevant to some is not to others. He also points out that a good portion of technical analyses are very difficult to understand.

Greg Wise’s presentation provides an overview of bioeconomy issues viewed from the local perspective.

Presentation #4: Real World Bioenergy and Bioeconomy: Dunn County Case Study.

Jim Faust’s presentation provides a case study of the Western Wisconsin Renewable Energy Cooperative.

Pete Kling’s presentation provides an overview of Earth, Wind and Fire; a project organized by UW-Extension educators from Chippewa, Barron and St. Croix Counties, The project tackles the bioeconomy issue by bringing people together to discuss ways to approach bioenergy development in western Wisconsin.

Presentation #5: Group Team Building Exercise.

Greg Andrews’ and David Liebl’s presentation provides an overview of Extension bioenergy outreach in the bioeconomy and poses questions about team building.

Plenary Session #2: What we’ve learned from nine years of ANRE team experience. Bill Rizzo discusses the preliminary results of the ANRE Team survey.

Plenary Session #3: What Makes a Great Agent/Specialist? Mike Rankin provides insight on What Makes a Great Specialist and Brian Holmes provides insight on What Makes a Great Agent.
