PlantDOC Cases http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/ Cases for UWEX Cooperative Extension PlantDOC Tue, 24 Nov 2009 03:50:50 CST en-us Established Alfalfa Stunting Cause and Effect http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6930 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6930 Mon, 11 Sep 2006 12:00:00 CST Second year alfalfa seeded in 05'. Fourth cutting last week observed striking contrast in alfalfa recovery. The strips of normal-stunted patterns were approximately 25-30'patterns. At one side of the field, the contrast disappears. Topdress fertilizer of(250#/a) 21-0-0-24 + 8lbs of boron were applied broadcast on June 3. On June 5, Raptor herbicide was applied to this field, rate unknown. Fertilizer spreader was a 50' spread and the boom width for the Raptor herbicide application was 80'. Plant/Tissue samples submitted 9-6-06. Suspect pan spreader on spreader? Unthrifty, stunted new alfalfa seeding http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4490 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4490 Thu, 08 Jun 2006 12:00:00 CST This is an alfalfa seeding from mid-April, 2006. The soil type is a Kewaunee red clay within eye sight of Lake Winnebago. The soil be was rough at seeding, which was done with a Brillion seeder. Plant height is variable in size, but not as big as they should be for being in the ground for nearly 60 days. There are lots of plants 2 inches or less in height. Tallest about 8 inches. Some yellowing of top leaves and red cotyledons are the only visual symptoms other than plant height (see photos). The field was corn last year with Callisto, Steadfast, and touch of atrazine. There is no indication of patterns consistent with herbicide injury (overlaps, skips, etc.). The variety was rated R for APH 2 and HR for PRR, but this sure looks like a potential APH problem (red clay, lots of rain). I did pull soil samples and sent it in for APH II testing. The growers question: Do I interseed now or wait and see what things look like in August? My recommendation was the latter given that the plants were there, just very small and not very vigorous. Interested in other opinions. Another question, are these plants too stressed to spray with Pursuit or Raptor? Alfalfa new seeding regrowth http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4310 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4310 Mon, 15 Aug 2005 12:00:00 CST Field one (image 1) is new seeding alfalfa after the fully matured oats were taken off in drought conditions. Producer is looking for recommendations on improving the stand. He has a brillion seeder and could interseed alfalfa, clover, etc. yet this fall or wait and frost seed next spring or??? Field two (image 2) is also new seeding alfalfa from a different producer who took oats off as oatlage. Field has plenty of broadleaf weeds, but was sprayed with select(?) to control grasses. Photo is from early August and showed a healthy new seeding competing neck in neck with the broadleaf weeds. My impression is that a cutting later this month would eliminate the weed problem or is their a better recommendation for this stand? Alfalfa Roots damaged with disease, insect??? http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4090 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4090 Fri, 06 May 2005 12:00:00 CST These photos of alfalfa roots were taken from an alfalfa field showing a 50% or better winterkill. Roots were dug and submitted for possible Brown Root Rot. Photos attached show specific root characteristics that I'd appreciate a description of. Field was planted in 2002, variety is Pioneer N221, previous crop was corn. The producer indicated that the last cutting taken last fall was excellent. He was unclear why their was such a serious dieback over the winter. Stubble in the field seemed to suggest that their was more then 6 inches of growth left in the field last fall. Alfalfa Stem Disease http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2610 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2610 Fri, 31 May 2002 12:00:00 CST Area alfalfa fields are showing straw-colored lesions on stems. Appears to me to be Anthracnose. Any other comments. What kind of impact on Yield? Alfalfa winter hardiness ratings http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2370 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2370 Wed, 08 May 2002 12:00:00 CST Good time of year to remind growers of the difference that winter hardiness ratings can make. The better of the two winter survival examples is Dekalb 124 (carries a very good winter survival rating in A1525).The other variety had not been tested to date for winter survival (as per A1525).When do trial entries receive a winter hardiness rating? Manitowoc County photos,5/7/02. Alfalfa stand thinning http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2350 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2350 Mon, 06 May 2002 12:00:00 CST Stand thinning in older alfalfa stands is nothing new. Crown rot (not shown) is present as would be expected. As weather warmed several weeks ago, these stands looked much better. Any thoughts on why aged stands often look better with the first front of warm weather and then rapidly become less thrifty in wetter, cooler weather? Manitowoc County photo, 5/6/02. Aphanomyces Root Rot in Alfalfa http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=1109 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=1109 Fri, 29 Jun 2001 12:00:00 CST These are photos of Aphanomyces Root Rot in Alfalfa. The pictures were taken in the spring of 2000. With the wet spring again this year we could see similiar problems. The presence of Aphanomyces was confrmed with soil tests in the field were these pictures were taken.
