This began growing out of it and is now 7ft tall with a 2" diameter stalk. Side shoots have the top tassel which looks like it will have tiny small yellow flowers once it actually blooms. Leaves have stiff hairs and almost feel sandpaperish on both sides with rough woody stalks. Looking for an ID. It is growing as part of a landscape in a homeowners lawn planted by the previous owner who has no clue what he planted or where it came from. The new owner has small children and is concerned that the fruit might be toxic to his family. Can anyone help me ID the shrub and tell if the fruit is toxic? Thank You! The leaves develop small brown spots as shown. These spots get bigger and eventually the whole leaf turns brown and falls off. The vine is growing grapes but as the leaves get worse the grapes turn hard. They sprayed vines with Bonide citrus fruit and nut spray 2 years ago and sprayed last year with liquid cop. Neither worked. What is wrong with these grapes? Rain barrels from phosphoric acid containers http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=9030 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=9030 Tue, 07 Oct 2008 12:00:00 CST Our Master Gardeners are doing a rain barrel project and a fertilizer company is willing to donate 55 gallon plastic barrels for converting to rain barrels. These barrels contained 85% phosphoric acid. They have been thoroughly rinsed and the donor would rinse again if desired. They shouldn't pose any risk to plants being watered from the barrels. My questions, after all the rinsing, what is the risk of acid burn and is it ok to use the barrels? Thanks, Ken Plum Tree http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8111 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8111 Mon, 23 Jun 2008 12:00:00 CST The new homeowner has been at the house for two years and the plum trees have produced fruit each year. One plum tree is now looking diseased. The plum trees are located near the road and no chemicals have been used on the lawn. In the winter months the county piles snow from the roads at the end of her drive, she is concerned maybe that is affecting the plants. She would like the trees identified and would like to know some form of treatment if any. Tree ID http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8071 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8071 Tue, 17 Jun 2008 12:00:00 CST The tree is about 5 inches in diameter and it has white flowers with red berries. The canopy of the tree fans out like an umbrella. The tree is about 12 feet tall and about 50 yrs old. The bark is grey and semi-smooth. The leaves are browning on the outer edges of the entire tree. The homeowners dont want to lose it because it is close to their deck. Looking for ID and possible cause of browning? Assessing the carnage http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7850 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7850 Mon, 09 Jun 2008 12:00:00 CST The 4-7+" of rain during the past few days has harkened back memories of 2004. Some potential topics of discussion and pictures: corn flooding-#16 and #22 soybean flooding-#10 lodged wheat-#15 weed control-#11 (note: more than the usual number of fields with no attempt to control alfalfa before planting) erosion and runoff-#25 Of course nitrogen loss figures to be huge and the economics of applying more N will be questioned. Still trying to finish up hay harvest. What isn't cut is lodged, wet, and for the most part yellow underneath the canopy. Compaction......a given!! Recovery of hail damaged soybeans http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4031 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4031 Tue, 21 Sep 2004 12:00:00 CST On August 3rd, the Fall River area of Columbia County was hit by baseball-sized hail. Returning to hail damaged fields 6 weeks later, we find that the soybean plants have recovered fully and have set pods. Seed is unlikely to mature before frost at this point, but the recovery observed suggests that this species is capable of a remarkable level of adaptation to adverse conditions. Is it possible that this field would suffer no yield loss if allowed to mature? 9-29-04 update. Light frost this morning. Extent of damage unknown. Soybeans have not matured significantly in the last week in spite of warm weather. They have developed powdery mildew. Hail damage on winter wheat http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=298 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=298 Mon, 15 May 2000 12:00:00 CST Significant hail damage on winter wheat in Manitowoc and Calumet counties on May 12. Wheat is severed with about a 6" stubble. My sense would be that no-tilling soybeans into the stubble would be the best option. My experience with wheat regrowth suggests next to nothing for yield potential. Additional recommendations and confirmation appreciated.
