PlantDOC Cases http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/ Cases for UWEX Cooperative Extension PlantDOC Tue, 24 Nov 2009 03:05:41 CST en-us Smutty Oats http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13744 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13744 Wed, 15 Jul 2009 05:42:35 CST Directed seed oats, no companion crop. Droughty conditions. Farmer has cut and baled some already as feed for beef cows. Would like to cut and bale this field too. Is this loose smut and if it safe to feed to his beef cows? Wild Oats in Cereal Oats http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6690 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6690 Fri, 07 Jul 2006 12:00:00 CST Farmer planted certified Jerry oats in ~5 acre field. Oats have been grown in this field for the last 6 years. Recently notice a large patch 40' x 150' that had much taller oats, with more open and larger seed heads. The oats in question appear to be wild oats, and did appeared both in the planted row and in between planted rows. This is the first time the farmer has seen this and I have not observed wild oats in the area before either. Given the fact that this is the only field on the farm with wild oats, what is the chance that is came in on the purchased seed (South Dakota Certified Seed)? What control options would be recommended to reducing wild oats on the farm in the future? Leaf burn on winter wheat http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2470 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=2470 Tue, 21 May 2002 12:00:00 CST Leaf burn on winter wheat from 2,4-D and 28%. Coop agronomist says they were putting on about 20 gallons of 28%(around 40 pounds of N) with an additional 10 gallons of water to reduce the leaf burn. Does cold weather accentuate this problem (night temps in the 30s)? At these rates is leaf burn to be expected? As per an earlier discussion, a grower applying about 20-25 units of N with 28% didn't report any problems. Manitowoc County photos, 5/21/02 Armyworm damage in winter wheat http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=1129 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=1129 Mon, 02 Jul 2001 12:00:00 CST Armyworm damage in winter wheat is evident on 7/1/01. Leaf ragging and head clipping. Thresholds are below 3 per square foot at this point. As per our phone conversation, we're recommending Warrior over Sevin given the potential for several generations. Wheat harvest will be close to the end of July. Additional comments welcome. Wheat, what, and how? http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=927 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=927 Thu, 14 Jun 2001 12:00:00 CST Situation: Field was seeded by a previous landowner in spring 2000 to alfalfa with triticale and pea cover crop which was harvested for forage (but I don't know when). Alfalfa stand was determined not to be good enough to keep last summer. New owner of land sprayed field with Roundup and seeded winter wheat last fall. The wheat was purchased directly from Kaltenberg and several neighbors planted the same seed lot without any problem. This field has a lot of what appears to be rye or possibly triticale (awns are bristly). It is not uniformly distributed in the field, adding further evidence that the original wheat seed lot was not contaminated. Clearly, this is a winter cereal (too early for spring triticale to head). I was under the impression that most triticale-pea mixtures had spring varieties. Further, if harvested for forage, how could there be any viable seed that would regrow as volunteer? How do you distinguish a triticale head from a rye head? Is it possible to separate wheat seed from rye/triticale? Caution in planting bin run 2000 winter wheat http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=366 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=366 Wed, 16 Aug 2000 12:00:00 CST Orth farms (local certified seed producer) reports significant scab problems in recently harvested winter wheat among certified seed growers.Germination test results have been very poor. Farmers should be reminded of potential problems in planting bin run seed. Additional comments welcome. Small grain recovery (oat) from hail damage http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=306 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=306 Fri, 02 Jun 2000 12:00:00 CST Submitted for archive use and future reference. Oat recovery from 5/12/00 hail storm on 6/1/00 is complete. Reflects research suggesting that before jointing small grains are least susceptible to hail damage. Winter wheat recovery from hail damage http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=307 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=307 Fri, 02 Jun 2000 12:00:00 CST Winter wheat recovery on 6/1/00 from hail on 5/12/00 is marginal at best. Regrowth is evident but uneven. Heading at 24" plant height. This matches well with research suggesting that hail damage during jointing or the boot stage is difficult to assess. Most of these fields have been spayed back and no-tilled back into soybeans. Additional comments welcome.
