PlantDOC Cases http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/ Cases for UWEX Cooperative Extension PlantDOC Wed, 25 Nov 2009 02:09:46 CST en-us Wild Parsnip.....gone wild http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13907 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13907 Tue, 01 Sep 2009 01:28:45 CST It continues to amaze how fast wild parsnip is spreading. This town road was mowed after the initial flush of WP was headed out (about 2 weeks earlier than the county roads, and the 2nd mowing of the season). Now we see a second strong flush coming-on. Can we really expect road crews to mow for a 3rd time? That will be a tough sell (I think). Interestingly, the county roads mowed 2 weeks later have no regrowth, but the seed from the first flush may have been viable (not sure). Do we know the best mowing strategy? Maybe there isn't one as evidenced by the last picture of WP near the culvert in my front lawn. I "weed whack" that area pretty regularly. I think we might be fighting a losing battle unless mowing occurs frequently (not likely) or a chemical approach is initiated (also not likely). cactus http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13787 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13787 Mon, 27 Jul 2009 04:17:59 CST Recieved a question pertainng to the removal of cactus infestations at one of our county cemetery. Not too many calls about cactus. Sounds like they have a couple of small patches (10 x 10 or so). Did a quick search and found tordon listed as a control. What control will work for a small homwoner type of problem? Soybean Injury http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13673 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13673 Wed, 01 Jul 2009 10:17:36 CST A spray pattern is not noticable. However, injury is more severe in low areas of the field and somewhat closer to the neighboring corn field. A photo of a single plant is now posted. Foliar injury to soybeans. RR soybeans planted early-May into corn stubble. Corn in 08 was sprayed with 2.3 oz GMax Lite and 3 oz Hornet. Soybeans sprayed early June with Roundup PowerMax. Neighboring farm to the south sprayed corn with a mixture containing 2,4-d one week before symptoms occured. High humidity, high temps, and heavy fog occured after application. Neighbors corn shows curling of corn plants while soybeans were also injured showing cupping and wrinkling. Could the 2,4-d from the neighbors farm have caused this or could some carry over from the Hornet be a possibility? Does not look like sudden death syndrome as plants appear to be growing out of it. Other thoughts? controlling stonecrop sedum http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13614 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=13614 Tue, 23 Jun 2009 12:55:13 CST A client brought in a sample of sedum and I have struck out on finding info on herbicides for control. Sedum being a flshy type of plant is harder to control. Pasture http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8291 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=8291 Thu, 10 Jul 2008 12:00:00 CST The client wants to spray and disk his fields to control the weeds but does not want to use roundup because it also kills grass and clover. He wants to treat about 4 acres and has one horse in the pasture. Attached are photos of samples of the weeds that he brought in that are present in his pasture. He would like suggestions of any herbicides he could use and also maybe techniques he could use to control the weeds. Also attached is one weed that he would like identified it has yellow flowers and grow to be about a foot tall. Thanks for the help Lawn Weed http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7991 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7991 Mon, 16 Jun 2008 12:00:00 CST This weed is taking this clients lawn. What is the weed and any suggestions on control? Weed (mostly chickweed) control in Wheat Field http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7670 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7670 Fri, 02 May 2008 12:00:00 CST This wheat field is filled with chickweed. Will it need control? If so what should be used and when should it be applies? If no herbicide is applied, will the wheat take a yield hit? Shephardspurse in new fall Alfalfa seeding http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7671 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7671 Fri, 02 May 2008 12:00:00 CST This 2007 fall seeded alfalfa field appears to be overrun with Shephards purse. Any thoughts as to best control options? The timing seems a bit tight (30 day harvest window) for the use of herbicides? Harvesting early is one option on my short list. Any others? 2, 4-D Drift? http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7330 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=7330 Wed, 25 Jul 2007 12:00:00 CST These are some pear trees adjacent to a field where herbicides were sprayed. I don't have much doubt about the problem with the trees, but the farmer claims it is from salt on the roads. Post-season control of Horsetail http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6950 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6950 Fri, 27 Oct 2006 12:00:00 CST In no-till soybean/corn rotations, Field Horsetail is spreading in to fields, especially Roundu-up Ready systems. Glyphosate is not controlling these previous isolated areas. While not competing with corn, it does impact and dominate soybeans. Will a fall/post-harvest application of herbicides containing Beacon or it's related family of chemistry control it or merely suppress Horsetail? What other control options exist? Broadleaf Escapes in Roundup Ready Soybeans http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6790 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6790 Wed, 16 Aug 2006 12:00:00 CST Lamsquarter, Pigweed and Velvetleaf has escaped two seperate and full rate applications of glyphosate in RR Soybeans with 30" row spacing. The first application made by the grower was made at V3 using Glyphomax at 24 oz. per acre, and cultivated once. A second application was made commercially with WeatherMax at 22 oz. per acre. Soybean variety selection/drycaused less than 100 percent canopy. Sprayer nozzle malfunction is suspected (on second application) due to streaking effect of weeds. Large Lambsquarter-(majority average 3-4'), Pigweed and Velvetleaf threaten harvest. Re-spray? Resistance? Dandelion in Non-GMO Soybeans http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6630 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=6630 Mon, 19 Jun 2006 12:00:00 CST This field was winter wheat in 05. Aim herbicide used in spring O5. Fall killed in October 05 with 1QT of 2,4-D, 1 1/2 pint of Buccaneer and 0.3 oz of Express XP. In May 06 non gmo soybeans planted and another pint of 2,4-D, generic roundup, and gangster as pre emerge. Question is why so many dandelions after these treatments and what can be used to rid of dandelions? October 05 treatment was made immidiately prior to other fields and these fields are clean of dandelions. Field BIndweed in V6 Field Corn http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4510 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4510 Thu, 08 Jun 2006 12:00:00 CST Positive identification of Field Bindweed or Hedge Bindweed versus other morninglory family. The enlarging patches of bindweed range in size from 12" to 30" vines. The grower used Keystone/Hornet as a pre-emerge herbicide. Little impact on the bindweed. Looking for positive I.D. and which herbicide post-emerge (spot spraying) will be effective. Understand that Distinct may work well? Also, comment on next crop such as a Glyphosate-resistant variety of soybeans. Drift of Corn Herbicide to Clover/Alfalfa Hay http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4410 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4410 Mon, 05 Jun 2006 12:00:00 CST An adjoining field (field corn) to the Clover/Alfalfa field was sprayed with a pre-emerge combination of Lumax + Keystone. The digital photo's show a bleaching of the sensitive red clover plants in the hay field. I'm looking for confirmation of my diagnosis that the Callisto component in this tank mix is the culprit. The farmer is ensiling the field and is questioning if there is any feeding restrictions. And, the farmer has had repeated problems with the adjoining farm operator regarding drift. Wind speeds were W-NW at well over 10 mph at the time of application. I believe the Lumax label requires application at wind speeds less than 10 mph. Forage Grass Herbicide Injury http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4390 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=4390 Wed, 31 May 2006 12:00:00 CST A 2005 spring seeded mixed grass (timothy, brome, orchardgrass hayfield was sprayed with (likely 2,4-D) in mid-may for control of annual broadleaves. Damage such as leaf burn and severe stunting of the grasses was observed. There is not clear evidence that purging or the first pass with the sprayer indicated more injury than the last passes. Grasses adjacent to the sprayed area is double in height. 2004 Prevented Planting Fields http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3810 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3810 Tue, 08 Jun 2004 12:00:00 CST It's evident that many producers will take their insurance payout and choose not to plant certain fields in 2004. This then leaves us in a position of unplanted acres essentially laying fallow all summer. How can these acres be best managed? Clearly, there is the issue of not allowing weeds to go to seed. Options to prevent this include mowing, tillage, or a cover crop. In the case of tillage, it will take more than one operation. Cost, erosion, and impact on soil structure are considerations. A cover crop can't be harvested for economic gain. Perhaps winter wheat can be planted, which won't tiller and produce seed, is an option but weeds might grow through the crop. Thoughts??? Odd formation of corn brace roots http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3650 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3650 Wed, 24 Sep 2003 12:00:00 CST Grower called to my attention that about 5-10% of the corn in a field had exhibited some "odd" formation of brace roots. His initial question to me was "Was this caused by corn rootworm?" Field history - Previous crop has alfalfa, plowed in the fall of 2002. Some manure applied over the top in winter. Dual/Hornet impregnated on fertilizer and broadcast and incorporated prior to planting last week in April. Heavy rains following planting caused a very slow emergence. Post emergence herbicide program - Banvel/Beacon. Very good growing conditions until mid to late July. Roundup Ready Horseweed? http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3515 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3515 Fri, 25 Jul 2003 12:00:00 CST Soybean field with possible herbicide damage problems. Field is Roundup Ready, sprayed over 2 weeks ago. Horseweeds are alive and well. Stunted, purple corn http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3410 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3410 Wed, 02 Jul 2003 12:00:00 CST Second year corn. Last year he had the same problem in certain spots in this field. Stunted plants have shortened internodes and purpling, especially on the backs of the leaves. Last year a consultant suggested a compaction problem and the grower subsoiled last fall. The ground is low, some muck soils some silt loams; field is tiled. Stunted areas do not correspond to the lowest areas in the field. Variety is Dekalb 440, herbicides sprayed are Hornet (4 oz.) and Surpass (3 pt.), applied starter fertilizer, 38" rows, cultivated last week. Herbicide Drift From Soybeans on Corn http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3430 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3430 Wed, 02 Jul 2003 12:00:00 CST On this late planted corn (now V6), obvious symptomology of a herbidide drift from an adjacent no-till soybean field. The symptoms are corn that is stunted, interveinal chlorosis, and purpling. There is some white flash in the whorl on a few plants. The affected area is approximately 60 feet wide. Is this a amino acid inhibitor mode of action herbicide? If so, what might be the affects (yield) of the area surviving plants? If this is Pursuit, when do the symptoms peak? Dandelions in alfalfa http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3231 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3231 Wed, 21 May 2003 12:00:00 CST Whenever a situation like this is encountered, one can't help but think of the old Gordon Harvey quote, "If dandelions had green flowers, nobody would worry about them." Not sure if that would be the case here, but like last year alfalfa is short and dandelions are quite noticeable. Foxtail escapes in soybeans http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3090 http://www.uwex.edu/ces/ag/plantdoc/viewCase.cfm?cid=3090 Tue, 20 Aug 2002 12:00:00 CST Always a good time of year to be noting weed escapes in soybeans. Significant foxtail pressure has shown up in past couple of weeks. Would have expected better control from Pursuit Plus and crop canopy. Comments appreciated.
