Looks like bark has been chewed away in sections. Suggested animal damage but client disagrees. Same thing is happening in another maple tree 10 feet away. Fir trees and ash tree unaffected. Water the lawn but not trees specifically and lawn care company treats lawn for weeds and applies fertilizer. Found what looks to be an immature western seed conifer bug on sample but found nothing else when peeled away bark. Note: the photos are taken from already dead branches.
