Case Details
corn foliar issues
Submitted by Scott A. Reuss on 9/23/2009
The symptoms shown in the pictures are showing up in various situations in Marinette & Oconto Counties this year. Most severe symptoms are on corn on corn on the drier soils. The pictured plants are from a field of Garst hybrids, in which about 60% of the plants exhibit some degree of these symptoms. Only areas without symptoms are on moister soils. I know that there are fungal leaf spot issues, but am mostly concerned about the interveinal chlorosis and what may be interacting to cause that.

The chlorotic leaf margins appear to be K deficiency. You may see more symptomology on the lower leaves compared to upper. Dry soil conditions can sometimes induce a K deficiency because uptake is limited compared to moist conditions. Compaction can exacerbate K deficiency, again because of limited uptake. Soil test different places in the field (symptomatic and asymptomatic) and perhaps tissue test as well. Also use a soil probe to get a relative assessment of compaction in the different areas.
