Alfalfa winter hardiness ratings
Submitted by Scott R. Hendrickson on 5/8/2002
Good time of year to remind growers of the difference that winter hardiness ratings can make. The better of the two winter survival examples is Dekalb 124 (carries a very good winter survival rating in A1525).The other variety had not been tested to date for winter survival (as per A1525).When do trial entries receive a winter hardiness rating? Trials receive a winterhardiness rating in the extension publication when we have tested them. A few companies do not enter their varieties to receive such a rating, often this is because they know the varieties will no fare will in such a trial. I strongly recommend that all purchase only alfalfa varieties with good winter survival ratings to avoid the problems you picture.
