Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) Found in a Dairy Cow from central California

As part of our targeted surveillance system, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the nation's fourth case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in a dairy cow from central California.

Medical Reserve Corps Statewide Spring Conference

The Medical Reserve Corps Statewide Spring Conference for the Wisconsin Animal Response Corps will take place on May 11 and 12 in Wausau. Veterinary and animal related topics will be offered on Friday, May 11. Incident command system and disasters will be discussed on Saturday, May 12. This conference is a good educational opportunity for county agriculture agents to become knowledgeable about threats to livestock and the role of animal rescue response in disasters

Did you know Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes each year? Now is the time to be prepared for storm season. Wisconsin's Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 16-20, 2012.
Once again, Wisconsin Emergency Management, ReadyWisconsin, and the National Weather Service have teamed up to help you and your family get ready for severe weather and to participate in the upcoming statewide tornado drill which is set for Thursday, April 19 with a Mock Tornado Watch issued at 1:00 p.m. and a Mock Tornado Warning issued at 1:45 p.m.

Ready or Not? Protecting the Public from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism finds key programs that detect and respond to bioterrorism, new disease outbreaks and natural or accidental disasters are at risk due to federal and state budget cuts. The report, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), identifies some key programs at risk due to continued cuts to federal public health emergency preparedness funds.
The report also includes a series of recommendations that will be important for improving America's preparedness.

Nuclear Disaster in Japan

Nuclear reactors at a power plant in Japan were severely damaged by a powerful earthquake off the northeast coast and the devastating tsunami that was generated by the quake. A series of explosions, nuclear releases and evacuations was on-going still on-going March 27 as the Japanese government and nuclear plant owners continued efforts to contain and repair the damage.
