Incubator and Shared Kitchens
For many food businesses, the capital investment required to construct a certified kitchen can be prohibitive. Renting space in a shared kitchen can provide a viable alternative to start-up business as well as to established companies that can operate efficiently in a shared space.
What is an "incubator" or "shared" kitchen?
The terms "incubator" and "shared" kitchen are often used interchangeably but do have slightly different meanings. Of course, there are any number of facilities that fall somewhere on the spectrum between a simple shared kitchen and a full service incubator.
- A shared kitchen is a certified space that individuals can rent for production of their own food products. No support services are assumed to be included.
- An Incubator kitchen generally refers to a shared kitchen space that offers some level of business development support such as assistance with business planning, label design, marketing, and food safety compliance. This may also include shared access to office equipment such as a fax machine, photocopier, computer, and printer.
