Annual Reports and other corporate filings required by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) provide some of the best and most reliable information about publically traded companies. These documents can be intimidating to the unitiated. However, with a little persistence and patience, they can reveal important information that can help communities and local businesses better understand the new BIG kids on the block.
EDGAR The best and most comprehesive, and FREE site is the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval system (EDGAR), developed and maintained by the SEC. EDGAR's primary purpose is to increase the efficiency and fairness of the securities market for the benefit of investors, corporations, and the economy by accelerating the receipt, acceptance, dissemination, and analysis of time-sensitive corporate information filed with the agency. Don't be intimidated by the offical SEC look of EDGAR. It is easy to use and provides ready access to corporate annual reports for viewing or downloading.
CORPORATE HOME PAGES Every publically traded corporation is required to file an annual report. Many are availalble on the company's home page. In most cases, simply find and select the "Investor Relations" tab (often hidden at the bottom of the home page in very small print). Typically, annual reports and other corporate filings are listed and available for viewing or downloading.
