Wisconsin Bioenergy Sites and Sources is a website to help understand and use information relevant to siting and operating facilities for producing biofuels and energy from sources of biomass in Wisconsin.  It provides multiple resources, described below and linked above, for a wide range of stakeholders – entrepreneurs and developers, regulators and public officials, communities and concerned citizens, and producers of feedstock and biomass by-products that are used for fuel and energy. The Bioenergy Sites and Sources website is constantly being updated and enhanced. We invite you to check back often.

Site & Source Concepts - These pages provide an introduction to key issues in the siting of biofuels facilities such as feedstock resources, existing operations, and constraints associated with facility siting and operation such as land use, infrastructure, environment, community character, etc.  Maps and text give a broad overview of conditions in Wisconsin on a statewide basis, providing a snapshot of where opportunities for facilities may exist at a regional level or where constraints may be significant.

Interactive Mapping - We have gathered and organized numerous spatial data layers relevant to siting and facility operations and present these through interactive mapping.  Users can select data useful to their interests and use mapping tools to zoom into an area to display and query the results.  We hope that visual analysis of these data along with some database and analytic capabilities of the interactive mapping software will provide information useful down to a local level.  Other data sources will be needed for site-specific details.

Tools & Data - A download function is provided for the interactive mapping layers that we have permission to re-distribute.  We also provide links to:

  • other sources of relevant data;
  • tools and models useful for analysis of biofuel facilities and bioenergy production;
  • links to other web-based resources Wisconsin’s bioeconomy;
  • links to agencies and organizations concerned with siting facilities and sourcing materials in Wisconsin

Biomass Market Exchange (coming in 2009) - This is an interactive web-mapping and data base application that provides information about sources of biomass materials which have potential for incorporation in fuel or energy production.  It provides overview information on crop and forest production and current farm and industry sources of biomass byproducts (e.g., manure, processing wastes, and other biosolids).  It functions as a commodity exchange, providing a tool for producers to market biomass and for users to locate it within a multi-modal transportation framework.
