These readings have been selected to help prepare participants for the upcoming seminar on the Global Economy. Please read and discuss the following readings prior to the November 11th seminar. The first four readings are required. The links to the articles on the World Band and IMF are optional, but recommended.

#1 In THE LEXUS AND THE OLIVE TREE, Thomas Friedman explains that the globalized world was born the day the Berlin Wall fell. He argues that globalization has replaced the cold war. Friedman presents a compelling, yet entertaining description of the new globalized world. #2 PERSPECTIVES ON GLOBALIZATION: WHY SOME COUNTRIES ARE RICH AND OTHERS POOR? HOW HAS GLOBALIZATION CONTRIBUTED TO THE WEALTH OR POVERTY OF NATIONS? Writtten by Michael T. Morley, this paper received first prize in the aWORLDCONNECTED.org Globalization Essay Contest. Other winners worth a look.

#3 In 2000, the United Nations unanimously passed the MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS. The introduction to the WORLD VIEW, published by the World Bank outlines these goals and the challenges that must be met to acheive them. Simply click on "introduction".
