November 7, 2011

Colleagues,

The CSO Conference and Annual Meeting took place on Thursday, October 20, 2011. This year’s conference “Respectful Workplace” had a good turnout and Ela Kakde, CNRED Agent from Lafayette County UW Extension presented the Communicating Across the Generations material. The presentation was very informative and we had fun exploring the material and discovering characteristics about our specific generations as well as those that either preceded or followed our specific age groups.

The day started off with Chancellor Ray Cross stopping by. Chancellor Cross was very gracious and sat down with us and had a conversation about what is happening at Extension and encouraged us to participate in giving input on the New UW Personnel System. Angie Koppen and Sharon Klawitter have sent out emails (contents pasted below my signature) and reminders regarding this. I am attaching the ‘Current Personnel System Assessment Tool’ Excel file that is being used for input. Please have your input submitted no later than November 7, 2011. There were many good questions from the classified staff that were at the conference and this is our chance to give constructive input and ideas to the team that will be structuring the system for the future and how the personnel system will function.

Thank you to Kurt Rose for the fun and fast moving Ice Breaker. We had fun and had to think quick on our feet, and learned more about ourselves and colleagues.

We were also fortunate to have Dean Klemme and Associate Dean Horton attend our luncheon and Annual meeting. Dean Klemme presented the Classified Staff Award of Excellence to Alicia Terry from Milwaukee. Alicia is an LTE that has worked for Extension since she was 15 and she is a remarkable colleague who takes the vision, values and purpose of the Extension to heart. There were many good nominations and the decision for the top honor was a hard one. Congratulations to all that were nominated and keep up the excellent work!

During our Annual Meeting, Mary Czynszak-Lyne, representative of AFSCME Local 2412 shared an update on the union and answered questions. If anyone has any questions please contact Mary at (608) 262-2984 or via email mczynsza@wisc.edu. This is a reminder that Union dues are now optional. Call Mary if you have questions and you may also visit http://afscmelocal2412.union-local.org/Index.htm.

For those of you that attended we will be sending out an evaluation survey, so keep an eye out for it within the next week or so. If anyone has any suggestions for future conference themes and offerings and you were unable to attend this year’s conference, please feel free to email me your suggestions. katy.sticha@ces.uwex.edu. There will be a space on the evaluation form for those that attended to make suggestions for future offerings as well.

With the future in mind, your Cooperative Extension Classified Staff Organization’s (CSO) success is due to all of you who support the organization. At this time, the Classified Staff Advisory Council (CSAC) is looking for energetic, inventive, and/or creative classified staff to step up and nominate yourself or someone else to the CSAC. We need 3-5 additional members and also are looking for a Union Representative. Stormy Cooley stepped up and filled that position in 2011. Thank you so much Stormy.
