Centers & Programs

  • Center for Community Economic Development - The Center for Community Economic Development, creates, applies and transfers multidisciplinary knowledge to help people understand community change and identify opportunities.
  • Basin Educators - The UW-Extension Basin Education Initiative designs and delivers educational programs, assists organizations, and builds partnerships to promote understanding and stewardship of Wisconsin's natural resources at the watershed and landscape scale.
  • Environmental Resources Center - The Environmental Resources Center promotes informed decision making on natural resource issues in Wisconsin and nationwide by working in partnership with individuals, community leaders, and resource professionals to develop and deliver research-based educational programs and materials. The ERC faculty and staff conduct and coordinate research and educational programs on a broad variety of natural resource management issues.
  • Center for Land Use Education - The Center for Land Use Education was established in July 2000. It is a joint venture of the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point and Cooperative Extension in collaboration with UW systems institutions. It is a focal point for land use planning and management education. Within the limits of its resources, the Center responds to related educational needs and priorities of our state-wide clientele.
  • Local Government Center - The mission of the Local Government Center is to provide focus, coordination, and leadership to UW System educational programs for local government, and to expand the research and knowledge base for local government education. The Center conducts and coordinates educational programming in general local government, local government finance, growth management, and community planning & design.
  • SHWEC - Solid and Hazardous Waste Education Center - The SHWEC mission is to enhance Wisconsin's environment and economy by providing quality education, information and technical assistance to promote the sustainable use of natural resources.
  • Central Wisconsin Groundwater Center - The CWGC was established in 1985 and is here to help Wisconsin citizens and governments manage the groundwater resource wisely, through education, public information, applied research, and technical assistance. Groundwater is an essential resource for Wisconsin. It provides drinking water for 70% of Wisconsin residents and 95% of Wisconsin communities. However, as population grows and land uses intensify, the threats to groundwater quality and quantity are increasing. Individuals and communities need help in using information and developing skills to decide the future of their drinking water and groundwater resources.
  • Center for Watershed Science & Education - Helping citizens and communities manage their water resources through education, applied research, technical assistance, planning and partnership building.
  • Water Resources - Information about water quality and natural resources education programs in Wisconsin.
  • UWEX Lakes Program - Part of Wisconsin Lakes Partnership, a collaborative effort with the WI Dept of Natural Resources, the WI Association of Lakes and the University of Wisconsin-Extension

  • Rural Sociology - Sociology is the study of human social behavior. Rural Sociology is the subset of sociological studies which is particularly concerned with rural people and the conditions under which they live and work, and with the natural resource and development issues that are typical of nonmetropolitan regions.
  • Urban and Regional Planning - URPL's Extension function means that faculty and sometimes students are actively engaged in work throughout the state and beyond.  Extension programming in recent years has included research and outreach education on growth management, second home development, land use issues, forest resource policy, watershed planning, waste recycling, and conflict management training for planners and related professionals.
