Know Your Market Options for Biotech Crops

In addition to the traditional corn hybrid selection criteria, knowing approval status of transgenic corn is important if crops are to be marketed off the farm.  The list and options grow each year and changes in approval status also occur.  To complicate matters, not all local grain marketing outlets are willing to accept corn derived from every biotech event.  The ramifications of having unapproved grain get into the wrong marketing chain was well documented several years ago with the “StarLink” debacle.  It’s always good advice to contact local marketing vendors to confirm approved hybrids before they are purchased and planted.  Here is a table with the current status of biotech events as offered by the National Corn Growers Organization.
