The Vortex Forage Sample Dryer

        Farmers generally like to build stuff, as do most university ag engineers.  Dennis Buckmaster, of the latter genre from Penn State University, has recently come out with plans for a homemade forage sample dryer.  That’s right, no more using the kitchen microwave and compromising marital bliss or spending those family vacation dollars on expensive commercial moisture testers.  This homemade contraption is powered by a standard hair dryer (okay, marital bliss may still be compromised).  Buckmaster says his dryer can be built for around $40 and is as accurate as a drying oven (presumably more accurate than a Koster).  In addition to the hair dryer, parts consist of standard CPVC fittings and galvanized heat duct components.  The filter is made of plywood and furnace filter material.  Detailed instructions for building the forage drying unit can be obtained from the following web site:
