Oconto County Big Buddy Program

The Big Buddy Program is an award winning mentoring program that links a high school student with a 4th, 5th or 6th grader in:

  • community service,

  • fun activities,

  • help with homework,

  • and skill development.

Buddies meet once a week after school as a group with an adult advisor.  Some activities we've done in the past include visits to the nursing home, craft and wood projects, decorating pumpkins, hay rides, bowling, puppet shows, guest speakers, and a "buddy" cooked family meal.  At this time, the Big Buddy Program has been in  Oconto Falls since 1997. A mini version of the program occasionally operates in Oconto.

High School students (big buddies) submit an application and are selected to be in the program because they are thought to be positive role models.  In Oconto Falls, Buddies commit to one semester and then may re-apply.  Big buddies receive training in working with younger students, communication and listening, safety, refusal skills, leadership, and confidentiality guidelines.  They meet weekly for training and to plan activities for the group.

Feedback from students and parents has been very positive!  Students in the Oconto Falls Big Buddy Program say that since they've been in the program their school grades and attendance have improved, they feel better connected to the school, and feel helpful to another person.

"The program showed me I don't need drugs and alcohol to be noticed." -Big Buddy

"My little buddy has a new attitude toward school." -Big Buddy

"I have more patience" -Big Buddy

"My daughter had the feeling of being a special person." -parent of Little Buddy
