COOPERATIVE EXTENSION'S WISCONSIN NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM RECEIVES 2008 REGENT ACADEMIC STAFF EXCELLENCE AWARD
Madison, Wis.--The Cooperative Extension Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program (WNEP) recently received the 2008 Regent Academic Staff Excellence Award. The program was selected based on demonstrated excellence, initiative and creativity, and outstanding achievement.
“The Regents’ Award is the highest recognition bestowed on members of the UW System academic staff. These winners all embody the hard work, dedication and ‘out of the box’ thinking of our talented UW System academic staff,” said committee chair Regent Eileen Connolly-Keesler. “The Board is pleased to honor a group that helps to strengthen and invigorate not only our UW institutions, but the communities which they serve.” Academic staff members and programs from each of the 15 UW System institutions were nominated for this year’s awards.
WNEP provides knowledge and skills that enhance the quality of life for limited-resource families, youth and adults in 64 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties.
In Walworth County, WNEP works to build community connections and help people choose healthful diets, handle food safely, and become more food secure by planning for spending food dollars and planning meals, says Cristina Parente, WNEP Coordinator, Walworth County.
WNEP educational programming strives to help clientele change attitudes and behaviors to improve nutritional well-being. In 2006-2007, the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program’s community-based nutrition educators made more than 317,000 contracts with diverse, food stamp-eligible individuals and families.
“The Wisconsin Nutrition Education Program and our academic colleagues who teach in the community make a difference in the lives of families from every racial and ethnic group in Wisconsin,” said Associate Dean/Associate Director of Cooperative Extension Yvonne Roulhac Horton. “Through this program, limited resource families and individuals receive hope and education to help themselves in their time of need in urban, suburban and rural Wisconsin.”
The program is made possible through partnerships with federal, state and county governments, as well as with more than 750 local agencies. Cooperative Extension is a division of the University of Wisconsin-Extension, and offers research-based educational programs in each of Wisconsin’s counties. More information about the WNEP program and Cooperative Extension is available online at http://www.uwex.edu/ces.
