Junior Master Gardener Program beginning in Barron County
Barron County Master Gardener Volunteers will be providing
students in grades 3-5 an opportunity to become a certified Junior
Master Gardener this year. The program begins in September and
takes approximately one year to complete. Students in the program
will gain knowledge in such areas as: plant growth and development,
soils and water, ecology and environment, insects and diseases,
landscape horticulture, fruits and nuts, vegetables and herbs,
life skills and career exploration. The Junior Master Gardener
(JMG) program is an international youth gardening program of
the University Cooperative Extension network. JMG includes “hands-on” group
and individual learning experiences that provide a love of gardening,
develop an appreciation for the environment, and cultivate the
mind. JMG also gives children a chance to be of service to others
through service learning and leadership development projects.
They can explore the world through meaningful horticultural and
environmental science activities that encourage leadership development,
personal pride, responsibility, and community involvement.
JMG provides an opportunity to interact and bond with nature.
As they go though the JMG program, students will complete group,
individual, and volunteer projects. This is the first year Junior
Master Gardeners is being offered. Students pay $30.00 for the
program, but scholarships are available. Students receive a handbook,
complete activities on their own and with a group, and will have
an impact on next year’s Barron County Fairgrounds. Registration
is due September 15. Information and registration forms can be
obtained from the UW-Barron County Extension Office, 4-H leaders,
3rd, 4th, 5th grade teachers in Barron County schools, and the
Home School organization. (Some of them may not have the information
until after school starts.)
