MCYC Youth Rebuild Veteran's Memorial Garden

Just in time for the upcoming Veteran's Day next month, MCYC youth worked to beautify the flower gardens surrounding the Veteran's Memorial at Mirror Lake in Mondovi. During the week of October 5th, over twenty different youth participants from the Mondovi Community Youth Center worked to rake and tear out the overgrown plants and shrubbery behind the Memorial's brick wall. Each night after school the youth pruned shrubs, raked leaves, pulled weeds and hauled out branches. Next spring MCYC youth will complete the service project by planting perennials flowers, seeding the plot, and adding new red bark for a regal look. This service-learning event began as a suggestion from the Mayor. MCYC staff and youth then met with the Mondovi area American Legion members to better understand their wishes for the Memorial. MCYC youth were eager to complete this restoration service project in honor of the many local Veterans in Mondovi and surrounding Buffalo County. One young MCYC male said of the service, "I'm glad we are doing this because I am proud of what Veterans have done to protect us. I like giving back to them and know they will like that we are making the Memorial the best it can be again." MCYC is committed to serving the local community in attempts to fulfill its mission, "To provide youth with opportunities to engage in fellowship, recreation, service and learning."

The 2009 MCYC After Summer School Program youth enjoyed a safe place to learn, have fun, and engage in structured activities with friends and neighbors.
