NUTRITION EDUCATION MISSION
Growing numbers of Wisconsin individuals and families are facing
economic challenges and the problems of food insecurity. More
people are living in poverty, and increasing numbers are the
working poor. They are confronted with difficult choices in the
areas of food and shelter needs, credit obligations, and high
medical bills. In response to the diverse needs and resources
of the economically poor, our purpose is to develop and implement
community-based nutrition education programs, within a university
research-based context. We collaborate with community, state
and federal organizations in the design and implementation of
nutrition education programs.
We will help low income elderly, families and youth:
- make food choices that are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines
for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid
- manage their food resources and use thrifty shoppping practices
for nutritious foods
- use safe food handling, preparation and storage practices
WNEP education is supported by the USDA Food Stamp Program,
UW-Extension and local partners. Food stamps can help provide
a healthy diet. To find out more about food stamps, call 715-349-2151.

Food Preservation
Preserving food (canning, drying, freezing) can be an economical
and satisfying way to provide fruits, vegetables and meats for
you and your family. The United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) updates food preservation guidelines periodically to reflect
current food preservation research. UW-Extension publishes a
variety of food preservation booklets to assist you with safe
canning, freezing and drying of foods. These publications may
be viewed online at the UW-Extension
Publications web site or may be reviewed and purchased
at the Burnett County Extension Office.
Contact the Burnett County Extension Office to schedule a free
pressure canner safety check or to inquire about upcoming food
preservation classes.
