4-H
PROJECT INFORMATION - Llamas Unlimited
We have a very unique group because you don't have to own a
llama in order to get to know one. Members either own their own
llama or "borrow" one from a local farm. The borrowed
llamas stay at the owners' farms and the members go to the farm
to practice. This way, all kids have the opportunity to get to
know llamas without having to own one. Most members, so far,
have been non-owners and have become very good at handling llamas.
Member ages have ranged from 9-17. Llamas are generally very
curious, smart and gentle animals to work with. We teach how
to have fun safely.
During the year we have many fun events. Monthly meetings are
held in Juneau to plan events and learn the proper care of a
llama. With good weather, we meet frequently at a farm to practice
with our llamas. We teach many things: how to halter, walk on
a lead, proper showmanship techniques, obstacle courses and different
training techniques. Occasionally, we also take the llamas in
local parades and petting zoos. We do petting zoos as a fund
raiser for our club. Sometimes we also go for llama walks in
town to get to meet different people and obstacles.
At the Dodge County Fair, we have set up a display for our project.
The past two years we also had a llama show at the fair. This
year we will move our show to October 167 at the fair grounds
and call it "Old Time Gathering." Llamas are one of
the oldest domesticated animals in the world. We will be inviting
all 4-H members within the state to come and participate in our
show. This will create a larger show, a fuller day and more fun
for everyone involved. The 4-H portion of the show includes:
showmanship, obstacles, and costume competition.
"Old Time Gathering" will combine a llama show with
a festival atmosphere on Saturday, October 16, 1999. The llama
show will include several 4-H classes and one open class for
Jackpot competition. This will allow the public to come and see
handlers and llamas of all ages and experience. Alongside this
will be a wonderful gathering of old time artisans. We have gathered
volunteers who are willing to demonstrate any old time craft
or skill they practice. This will be a great opportunity for
everyone to learn and help preserve our history. There may also
be some wares and products available for sale. Exhibits will
include: spinning, weaving, wood carving, quilting, blacksmith,
basketry, rug hooking, felting, trapping, bobbin lace, candle
making, cooking, music, flint napping, storytelling, soapmaking,
tanning and much more. We are truly grateful to all these people
willing to share their gifts with us.
