YOUTH TRACTOR SAFETY

The Dodge County UW-Extension Office is accepting registrations for the 2010 Tractor and Machinery Safety and Certification Course.  Youth participants between the ages of 12 to 16 years will receive a variety of information and training on the safe operation of tractors and machinery that they may encounter on crop or livestock farms.

As specified by state law (WIS. Act 455), ANY youth under the age of 16 who operates a tractor or self-propelled equipment on the highway must successfully complete a Tractor and Machinery Safety course.  Federal Child Labor Laws also require that youth ages 14 or 15 must successfully complete a Tractor Machinery Safety program if they are performing hazardous work for a farmer other than their parent/legal guardian.  There are not too many jobs on the farm that are not considered hazardous. Some non-hazardous jobs on a farm include: picking stones, moving hay bales, operating less than 20 hp tractors (lawn mowing), working with animals, detasseling corn, milking cows, picking vegetables and berries, etc.  There are other jobs that are not listed here.

        Dodge County will offer the 24-hour Tractor and Machinery Safety course for youth in Dodge and surrounding counties.  The program will be taught over a three-week period on the Saturdays of Feb 6, Feb 13, and Feb 20, 2010, from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm at the Dodge County UW-Extension Office located at 127 E. Oak Street in Juneau.  The tractor driving exercise is tentatively scheduled April 23rd and 24th .

        Youth that plan to participate in the program should pre-register by filling out clip-out, or call 920-386-3790.  The participants name, address, phone number, grade and date of birth will need to be provided.  The cost of the program is $20 per participant.  Register now!  The course is HELD ONLY ONCE each year. Registration deadline is January 15th.  If received after the 15th there will be a $10 late fee. Participants must bring their own lunch to the program.

ANIMAL PREMISES IDENTIFICATION

The Wisconsin Premises Registration Act requires anyone who keeps, houses, or co-mingles livestock to register their premises. Premises that are not currently licensed by the DATCP are required to register by January 1, 2006. Those premises currently licensed by the Department must register by their annual license renewal date.
