DOUGLAS COUNTY HORTICULTURE
The Douglas County Horticulture Program
provides diagnostic services for commercial businesses and consumers and trains and coordinates Master Gardener Volunteers.
The Wisconsin
Master Gardener Class will begin on Tuesday evening, January 29, 2008. This course consists of twelve classes, meeting on Tuesday
evenings. Each three hour class will start at 5:30pm
and will be held in the Douglas County Courthouse. The cost of
the program is $120 per participant. A couple's discount is available.
This fee will cover the cost of the Handbook for Wisconsin Gardeners,
the Master Gardener Manual, and other program materials. To become
a certified Wisconsin Master Gardener, you must complete the minimum
36 hours of training, achieve a 70% or better score on the final
exam, and complete at least 24 hours of volunteer service within
one year of training.
The educational sessions
include the following topics:
Soil Management and Fertility
Growing Vegetables
Turf Care
Diseases and Insects
Shoreland Planting
Rain-gardens
Perennial and Annual Flowers
Fruit Crops
Attracting Backyard Wildlife
And much more...
The program includes information
on local problems and conditions, and includes some guest speakers.
The deadline to register
for the class is January 4, 2008. A total of 18 participants will be
accepted for the class.
Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
These free programs
are offered live via audio from UW-Extension, Madison, usually
the last Friday of the month at 12:00 (noon). A range of horticultural
topics are covered. Contact the Extension Office for information.
A publication series
with one to two page fact sheets specifically on horticulture
topics, designed to be user-friendly for home and commercial gardeners.
They are short, concise and easy to read, with an emphasis on
answers to questions that homeowners often ask about horticulture
issues. The Garden Facts are all free and available to download
and print.
A service of the UW-Extension,
gives answers to hundreds of commonly asked questions on a variety
of topics including horticulture, at times people need the information
most. Both internet and phone access are available 24 hours, seven
days a week! With the internet version you won't need a brochure
to select a topic, and you can print messages on demand.
Includes more detailed
information on a wide variety of topics including horticulture
. Most of the publications are free to download and print.
Lake Superior Master
Gardener Association
The Lake Superior Master
Gardener Association was formed by Master Gardeners in 1999. Activities
include horticulture volunteer projects and winter season educational
programs for the public. Annual dues are $20 per year.
