Objectives
To determine
the survivability of various grass species and varieties
to Dunn County soils and climate.
To access
the re-growth potential of various grass species and varieties.
To rate
the relative palatability of various grass species and varieties.
To
determine forage yields.

B. Procedures:
Plots will be
seeded in a randomized complete block with four replications
at the following rates: Orchardgrass (16 lb/a), Bromegrasses
(22 lb/a), Reed Canary Grass (13 lb/a) Fescues (16 lb/a)
Meadow Brome (22 lb/a), Meadow Fescue (16 lb/a), Festulolium
(20 lb/a) and Quackgrass (16 lb/a). Plots will be fertilized
with 50 lb N/a at seeding. Plots may be harvested to remove
top growth in the seeding year but no yields will be taken.
In succeeding years,
plots will be fertilized with 50 lb N/a on May 1 and after
first and second cutting. Plots will be harvested three
times annually (late May-early June, late July, and late
September-early October). Plots will be rated for maturity
before first cutting according to the following scale: 1
(vegetative), 2 (boot), 3 (initial emergence), 4 (panicles
or spikes emerged), 5 (full culm extension), 6 (pre-anthesis),
7 (anthesis), and 8 (post-anthesis).
Plots will be rated
for percent ground cover in late May to early June as an
estimate of stand survival. Studies will be maintained for
three years after seeding if stands persist. |
