SWYS - History of
SWYS in Grant County
UW-Extension in Grant
County has been cooperating with local schools to assess student
needs, concerns, behaviors and attitudes every four years since
1989. The 1989, 1993 and 1997 Teen Assessment Project (TAP) surveys
were conducted under the direction of Dr. Stephen Small at the
UW-Madison. Support and direction from Dr. Small was no longer
available when it became time to plan the 2001 survey. As a result
Grant County UW-Extension Faculty worked with Lafayette and Iowa
Extension faculty to develop, coordinate, disseminate and analyze
the 2001 Southwest Wisconsin Youth Survey (SWYS). Tom Schmitz,
Grant/Lafayette Youth Development Educator has been involved in
all four surveys and serves as the team leader for the 2001 survey.
In Grant County former Family Living Agents, Mary Huser, Nancy
Stoutenborough, and Christina Kenney have been key players in
the effort over the years. The four versions of the survey reflect
the concerns that were foremost in the minds of school and community
leaders as they developed the questions.
