County Latino Needs Advisory Committee
The committee began meeting in February 2005 to provide support to Green County Latino Needs Programming. Current committee members are:

Rural Immigration Summit |
Immigration is both a global and local issue - attend this summit to learn more about it!
What: Immigration in Rural Wisconsin. How do we understand what's bringing immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala or Peru to Wisconsin? Why are so Many immigrants "illegal"? How do I communicate with immigrant employees or clients? Why don't they know English? Are they helping our local economy to taking away jobs? We'll answer these questions and more! Demographics
- More than 35 million people in the United States identified themselves as Latino or Hispanic.
- In Wisconsin the number of people identifying themselves as Latinos is approximately 205,000.
- About 1% of Green County residents reported being of Hispanic or Latino origin.
- The number of people in Wisconsin identifying themselves as Latino has increased by 107% since the 1990 census.
- The Hispanic/Latino population in Green County more than doubled between 1990 (119 individuals) and 2000 (327 individuals).
- The median age of Hispanics/Latinos in Green County is 23 years.
- Of the 294 Hispanic/Latinos in Green County age five years or older, 35% (102) speak a language other than English at home.
- Only 7% (10 individuals) of Green County's Hispanic/Latino population 25 years or over have a bachelor's degree.
- The median family income in 1999 for Green County's Hispanic/Latino population was significantly less than the total county population - $28,654 and $50,521 respectively.

- Literacy Council of Green County
The Literacy Council provides free and confidential training, materials, and support for adults with limited reading and English language skills.

When Louis Aragon joined the Latino Needs Advisory Committee, he reported the need for distribution of information about services, programs, and community topics. Haciendo Amigos is the realization of his ideas and is supported by the Latino Needs Advisory Committee.
The Spanish-only newsletter is distributed on a quarterly basis to a variety of public locations and area businesses. If you would like copies at your location or if you would be interested in sponsoring an upcoming newsletter, please contact Bridget Mouchon at 608-328-9440.

Recursos para Familias en Espanol (Family Resources in Spanish)
This project created and distributed 24 resource binders to public locations and 66 resource packets to Spanish speaking families with children. Project made possible through a grant from UW-Extension Southern District. Resource content is available online:
The funding from UW-Extension Southern District also allowed for the purchase of Como Arreglarselas Cuando no Tiene Trabajo (Managing Between Jobs) for the Green County Job Center, six copies of Bienvenidos a los Estados Unidos de America: Guia para immigrantes nuevos (Welcome to the United States of America: A Guide for New Immigrants) each placed in the county libraries, and copies of Ayuda para los nuevos propietarios (HomeWise Help for New Homeowners) given to a Spanish-speaking realtor in the county. Copies of all of these resources were also purchased and are available for check-out at the Green County UW-Extension office.

Book Discussion Series: Latinos in the U.S.
Have you noticed when you read a novel or biography, you feel like you've become immersed in the world of the characters and their lives? We live our lives within our own world of class and culture, and understanding others' experiences is difficult. Reading liturature can bring alive a world apart from our own and can help us understand others' experiences. We extend to you the inviation to read with us one or more of four literature selections written by Latinos or about Latinos' experiences in the U.S. For more information, contact Bridget Mouchon at 608-328-9440, or by email. |
