Who Helps in 4-H? Leadership in the 4-H Community Club

4-H is really a family program. Parents and family are important in 4-H. 4-H Members are also helped by volunteer leaders who teach the boys and girls, organize the club, and help officers at meetings.

The 4-H Youth Development Agent administers the county 4-H program. She provides educational leadership for the programs, serves as advisor to the Leaders Council, and assists leaders and committees in providing educational opportunities for youth and adults.

Statewide 4-H specialists work at the UW and may help train 4-H agents and leaders, develop new programs and projects, and make the existing ones better.

What is a Club Leader?

A club leader is an adult volunteer who serve as the general leader of the 4-H Club. The club leader is responsible for the organizational aspects of the club, and advises the youth in making decisions for the club. The club leader may delegate tasks to other leaders and parents.

What is a Project Leader?

A project leader is an adult volunteer who helps 4-H members as they learn, make and do things in a specific project. Project leaders hold educational meetings with groups of 4-H members or with individual members at the club level.

What is a Youth Leader?

A club officer is a youth who has been elected by the club members to fill a specific role as an officer of the club: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and so on. Each club officer has specific duties and responsibilities related to planning, running meetings and other club activities.

A junior leader in a specific project is an older 4-H member who has several years experience in that project. The junior leader assists the club leader or project leader in teaching other youth about their projects.

Volunteer Orientation & Opportunities

All adult volunteers, age 18 and over, must complete the 4-H Volunteer Orientation process. This process includes a background records check with the Wisconsin Department of Justice and completion of the volunteer expectation guidelines.

There are many exciting ways you can be part of 4-H in Iowa County as an adult volunteer.  Local clubs offer a variety of leadership opportunities.  Being a volunteer gives you the satisfaction of working with others in the community to provide educational services to youth.  As a volunteer you can:

  • share your special skills and interests with youth;
  • meet other involved people in your community;
  • teach children to "learn by doing" and build self-worth;
  • strengthen family involvement in community affairs.

Share your talents, energy and enthusiasm in the Iowa County 4-H Program!
