The Llovely Llama and Alpaca club is open to youth from 8 years old (or in 3rd grade) to 18. We also offer a cloverbud program for those under 8 years of age.
This is a livestock project that begins with regular monthly, evening meetings offering animal handling, grooming, basic care and showing instruction. Each meeting ends with a ‘fun project’ that incorporates a link to the many uses of llamas and alpacas. This project does not require ownership of a llama or alpaca to participate. A basic requirement is commitment by the parent/guardian to transport the youth to the meetings and farms on a regular basis.
At the end of March all youth will become involved with actual hands on training at one of the local participating llama/alpaca farms. Animals will be assigned to the youth based upon past experience levels and abilities. Beginners are welcome! All farm instruction will be supervised by the farm owners. Success in this project is based upon time spent working with the animals and the kids comfort level by the 4-H fair show date. The farm owners are responsible for transporting the llamas/alpacas to and from the fair, the youth are responsible for the care and clean up on show day.
Llamas and alpacas are very unique, gentle animals that bond very well with youngsters. This project has been very successful for kids and parents who enjoy the outdoors and working with livestock that are easily trained and managed by the youth. We encourage farm visits for anyone interested in learning more about 4-H and the llama project.
