CROPS AND SOILS

Kewaunee County soils are well suited for growing a variety of
crops including corn, alfalfa, soybeans, small grains and vegetables.
In Kewaunee County, farmers face the challenge of making a living
from the land, while protecting our natural resources through
sound farming practices. Proper management of agricultural lands
to control erosion, remove excess water, minimize pollution and
provide a good economic return is necessary for Kewaunee County
agriculture industry to remain strong.
Approximately 80% of
the county has slopes of less than 6 percent and about twelve
percent of the county has slopes of 6-12 percent. Approximately
eight percent of the county has slopes of more than 12 percent.
In 2006, Kewaunee County
Farmers harvested:
- 48,500 acres of alfalfa
- 23,400 acres of corn for silage
- 20,800 acres of corn for grain
- 12,300 acres of soybeans
- 8,100 acres of oats
- 9,200 acres of winter wheat

CLIMATE
The annual precipitation
in Kewaunee County is 31 inches, about half an inch under the
state average. Of this, 54% falls in May through September, which
includes the growing season for most crops. Average seasonal snowfall
is 45.2 inches.
