Learning That Makes
A Difference for Families and Communities
Mary Meehan-Strub is
a Professor of Family Development and the UW-Extension Family
Living Agent for La Crosse County. Mary has a B.S. degree in Home
Economics Education from Viterbo College, an M.S. degree in Home
Economics Education from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, and Juris
Doctor from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Mary's program priorities
include:
- Consumer Health Education
- Financial Management
- Affordable Housing
- Leadership and Organizational Development
- Strategic Planning and Facilitation
Consumer
Health Education - Mary has served on the partnership
between the national agency for Medicare, CMS (Center for Medicare
and Medicaid Services), and CSREES (Cooperative State Research,
Education and Extension Service) to develop the Medicare education
capacity within Cooperative Extension Agents. The partnership
developed a Medicare Tool Kit for Cooperative Extension Agents,
throughout the United States, that will enable them to deliver
professional, concise, and understandable information and education
programs that enhance participants understanding about Medicare
and managed care. In addition to programs in La Crosse County,
Mary has taught sessions on the Medicare Tool Kit at the National
Priester Conference, the National Extension Association of Family
and Consumer Sciences, and for UW-Extension Family Living Educators/Agents
in Wisconsin. The information was also shared through the Program
Showcase at the USDA/CSREES Roll-Out Conference "Financial Security
in Later Life - A Cooperative Extension Initiative.
Family
Financial Consultant programs - Mary co-authored
the original educational training publications used
in this statewide program. She has trained and supervised volunteer
family financial consultants in La Crosse County to work
with individuals and families one-to-one to examine family money
management practices, assess current debt level, develop spending
plans, establish repayment plans and identify ways to extend financial
resources. Mary also provides training for agency and organization
personnel who work with family finances through on-going Family
Financial Management Workshops such as the "Women's
Financial Information Programs", "Money After Fifty" and
"Enhancing the Financial Literacy of Youth". Expanded financial
management programming now includes: "Legal Check-Up", "Financial
Security in Later Life", "Money Talk$", and youth programs
- "Consumer Savvy" and "Financial Champions."
Strategic
Planning and Facilitation - Mary has assisted
the W-2 Community Steering Committee, the La Crosse Area Communications
Consortium, the La Crosse County Child Care Advisory Committee,
the La Crosse Area Family Policy Board, and the Coalition for
Children With Mental Health, Developmental or Physical Disabilities
of La Crosse County in completing organizational assessments,
establishing mission/vision statements, and developing action
plans. She has provided leadership to the United Way
Data Collections Committee and the Outcomes Measurement-Logic
Model and Evaluation trainings.
