Addressing Economic Leakage at the County Level

Why is this an issue?

Our county has over a 20% negative net migration of its work force to out of county locations(Green, G. P., Hill, D.) This deficit migration has contributed to an economic leakage. Our county has few industry sectors and the tourism sectors, for the most part, are minimum wage type jobs. We are the center of a hub of four urban areas that are within commuting distance. Some people have the fear that we will become a bedroom community(Lafayette County UW-Extension needs survey, 2003). If this fear becomes a reality, the tax base would continue to shift from current businesses to the backs of the residents (Lindall, S. and Olsen, D. 1999).
