FAMILY LIVING PROGRAM AREAS

Co-parenting: Focus on the Children

Co-parenting: Focus on the Children - The Manitowoc County Family Court Commissioner requested the UW-Extension Family Living Educator to develop a session that addressed the parenting needs of couples involved in paternity cases. The result of that request is a three-hour session titled, "Co-parenting: Focus on the Children". Attendance is court-mandated. The session assists Manitowoc County parents in becoming the parents they want to be regardless of their marital status.

Wisconsin Bookworms

In 1997, Wisconsin Public Television joined a national initiative to make a difference in the lives of children through a non-televised outreach project called First Book. In January 2007, the name of this program was changed to Wisconsin Bookworms. This children's literacy program was initiated in Manitowoc County during the 1998-99 school year and remains a successful outreach effort. Wisconsin Bookworms encourages the development of reading skills with youth with hope that children will develop a life-long love of reading. The 210 youth served in Manitowoc County are three-to-five-year-olds enrolled in ten classes located at four Head Start sites. The Association for Home and Community (HCE), a program coordinated with the UW-Extension Family Living Office, provides leadership to make this program possible.
