NOVEMBER
November 14-15 — Beginner Sewing Camp
A 1 ½ day sewing camp designed specifically for beginning sewers will be held at the Marathon
County Extension office on River Drive on Friday, November 14, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm and
Saturday, November 15, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Camp is open to beginning sewers in grades 3 and up. Youth in grades 3-5 should be accompanied by
an adult. Older youth may also be accompanied by an adult, if desired. Youth will learn a variety of
basic sewing skills. Girls will make a skirt and boys will make shorts during the class. All participants
will make a display of the sewing skills they have learned.

November 14-16 — Wisconsin 4-H Horse Leader Conference
This is a statewide leadership workshop for 4-H Horse project Leaders. Youth leaders
grade 7 and up, and adult leaders are encouraged to attend this conference
which will be held at UW-River Falls
November 15 — Federation Meeting; 4-H Office Building
November 16 — 4-H Awards and Recognition Banquet; Memories Ballroom at Noon.
Lunch is at Noon and annual meeting to follow at 12:30 pm. If you would like to participate in the luncheon, your cost is $5.00 per person. Registrations with fees are due by Monday, October 13, 2008. Make check payable to Marathon County 4-H and send to 4-H Office, 212 River Drive, Ste#3, Wausau WI 54403. DECEMBER
December 6 — Market Animal Show & Sale Mandatory Organizational Meeting
This meeting will be held from 10 to noon at Marathon High School. All MASS Participants must attend the MASS organizational meeting. If you cannot attend, call Patti Zernicke at 675-2730 BEFORE the day of the meeting to learn about the possibility of a make-up meeting. (All NEW participants are expected to attend the December meeting…the program is explained very thoroughly at that time.)
December 6-7 — Badger Kick-off Classic
The 14th annual Badger Kick-off Classic prospect steer & heifer show, presented by the UW-Madison
Saddle & Sirloin Club, is scheduled to begin Friday, December 5 and continues
through Sunday, December 7 at the Wisconsin State Park in West Allis, Wis. Classes are
available for steers, market heifers and breeding heifers.
New experienced exhibitors are welcome to bring their project calves to
this open show. Animals do not need to be registered in the exhibitor’s
name, however do need to be registered to exhibit in a breed class.
Cash prizes will be presented to the top five market animals and heifers
as well as Andis clippers to breed champions and Andis clipper blades
to reserve breed champions. At the 2007 show, over $17,000 in prizes
were awarded.

December 12-13 — Animal Welfare & Quiz Bowl
UW-Madison will be hosting the Youth Animal Welfare Judging Contest on Friday, December 12, 2008.
Please pre-register by Dec. 5th. Registration for the Animal Welfare contest will start at 6:00 p.m. Friday
night in Room 209 Animal Sciences Building, with the contest starting at 6:30 p.m. Project areas are invited:
goats, rabbits, poultry, dairy, beef, sheep, horse, swine, and veterinary science. It will cost $2 to
participate in the competition. There will be two age divisions in the Youth Welfare Judging Contest.
The junior division made up of 3 to 4 members under 14 years of age as of January 1, 2008. A senior division
will be for teams of 3 to 4 members who are all 14 years of age or older as of January 1, 2008 and
that have not reached their 19th birthday prior to January 1, 2008. This contest allows 4-H and FFA members
(teams of 3 or 4 members or compete individually) to develop the skills to critically examine a situation
to gather unbiased information, and use that information to make a subjective but educated assessment
of welfare quality in a fun and competitive atmosphere.

Marathon County 4-H members, in grades 8 – 12 are invited to join teens from Marathon and Wood County 4-H at the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt. The program theme is “You can Change the World!” Cost is $35, registration is due by December 19th.

Beginning and advanced 4-H Quilters and their adult helpers can learn to make a Log Cabin Quilt (we have advanced versions of the quilt for our more advanced sewers) at UW-Extension Office Building, 212 River Drive. Cost of participation is $25 for 4-H members. Registration is due by January 15th.
